Casement window A/C
http://cdn.brownstoner.com/4df0dac8596aa-
We live in a high-rise with casement windows in our living room. I was hoping I would be able to handle the heat but this summer is shaping up to be another brutal one. The window is only 13 inches wide so I need an A/C that will fit but I’m having a heck of a time finding one that thin. PC Richards, Sears, Best Buy only have models that are 15 inches wide. Other windows in our complex (Clinton Hill Co-ops) have them but I don’t know where to get one. Any ideas?

to put the wiring inside the wall and ceiling, it would probably cost you $500 or $250 if you leave the wiring hanging outside on the wall & ceiling.

Misting machines do not work well here as they work by evaporation which is reduced in humid weather, and in any case will increase the humidity further, and that makes you less comfortable. Also an incentive to mold if used in closed spaces. If you can stand the higher noise level and lower efficiency of a portable unit, that’s the easier way to go. If you want go to the trouble, you could build a wood casing with a thru-the-wall a/c set inside the room, and the casing extended back to fit the window opening. Will be efficient but ugly.

The ceiling fan idea sounds good but we’d need an electrician because there are no ceiling “outlets” and I have no idea if it’s even possible to run a wire in the ceiling. I’ve been looking at the portable A/C units. I might end up doing that.

If you can’t find a window unit, you can always get a portable a/c unit. It’ll probably be about a foot taller than the box fan you have in the corner, but you’ll use way less window (and retain more views) than with a casement unit. They’re not very attractive, but you’ll stay cool.

if you look carefully, it’s either folks who cut into the frame to force fit them or flip a horizontal unit vertically (long term no no due to improper draining of the water leads to rust etc). I think the better investment (albeit a little more costly) is to put in a ceiling fan. crack the windows from the top vs. from the bottom. a nice complementary item is to get one of those cold water misting machines. if you run that along with a fan of some sort, you should be fine even if it’s not as nicely chilled as have an AC

Yes…google. They are all over 14 inches wide.
