Laundry under the stoop

Oh dear, now I’m wondering if maybe my sister recommended the Bosch? I could have sworn she said Miele but it was definitely not more than $750 for the dryer.

We are desperately trying to figure out where to put a washer/dryer. None of the obvious options (basement, extension in the rear, bathroom, kitchen, etc.) are good for us for various reasons. We were considering a ventless electrical stacked machine in a closet space, but EVERYONE advises us against electric and ventless because of how inefficient, slow, and expensive they are to run. A new idea occurred to me today, but I can’t find anything about it online – can I put a laundry under my stoop?? We have a lot of space under there and could fit one of the smaller side by side sets. This would involve running a gas line, water, electrical, and making a vent. Has anyone ever see this?? Obviously it’s not ideal and it’s cold and gets dirty under there – but if it’s possible, then we could take some steps to make it cleaner and warmer. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I’d think the possibility [probability] of freezing would be too great unless you insulate & heat it which would be expensive.

Ventless is a performance sacrifice, it just takes a lot longer to dry. Electric vs gas is not so much of a sacrifice. Newer model electric front-loading that are Energy Star certified are quite efficient. You want to keep it in a conditioned space – the colder the ambient environment is, the harder the dryer has to work to get to the hot drying temperature. Consider a closet on your top floor for the shortest, cheapest vent route to the roof.

I had the Bosch ventless electric dryer. I felt the overall inconvenience was minor as it took longer to dry. The high efficiency of the washer in spinning clothes dry did help. When they are 220/240v, they are a lot more efficient users of electricity. Yes, the cold found under the uninsulated stoop is going to be an issue.

We are planning to buy the separate Miele ventless condensing dryer and the companion (but separate) Miele washer on the recommendation of my sister. She has tried every sort of Miele washer/dryer and loves these. (FWIW she’s also an interior designer, so sometimes spec’ing these things for clients.) They are a family of four with two young boys, so they do a lot of laundry! The combined ventless units are useless, she said; she has also had vented gas Mieles in two houses as well as the separate ventless Miele dryer and washing machine. We already have a regular hookup with a regular washing machine and plan to eventually get these two Miele units in a Miele stacker because we don’t have room for side by side in our Brooklyn row house. We plan to put them in a pantry on the garden floor in the middle of the house where our regular washing machine is now. None of the other conceivable locations are an option for us. I looked into various scenarios for a vented dryer (DOWN into the basement and out 15-20 feet) and it seemed risky as well as troublesome since the vent would have to be cleaned often. Our mudroom is too small with no plumbing, heating or weatherproofing, and the top floor is occupied by a rental. Sure, we could put something on a back wall in the kitchen but it would be unacceptably ugly.

I’d be very wary of trying to run water lines out under an unheated stoop. A couple months ago when it was around 10 degrees I think you’d be looking at an expensive frozen leaking mess out there unless you spent a fortune to keep it heated. Plus are you going to have to tap into a main drain somewhere or let it drain into the stoop floor drain? We have an LG ventless combo unit – a full sized 4.5 cu ft, 110 volt model that actually works very well even when you fill it to a normal sized load. We recently added a new separate 220 volt LG dryer just so we could do more laundry in a shorter amount of time, but the combo unit washes and dries very well and then keeps the laundry steamy until you unload it. We still use the combo mode single unit if we are stepping out for the evening and need to do a load of laundry before we leave – all clean and dry when we get home.

I had a Bosch ventless electric dryer in my old apartment. It was smaller and did take longer to dry, but it did a good job. If I had space constraints, I would buy one again. Not a terrible option.

To Cate’s point, i’d say the combined units are different, not useless. They are slow, pricey and almost certainly too small for a family with two kids unless you run it every single day, but for one or two adults (ie. small apartments) they have their own advantages. I have one (an LG3455 – not all combo units are created equal!) discreetly parked under my kitchen counters; I can fire it up as i head out to work in the morning and later come home to a drum of dry clothes ready to fold.
