How many appliances can I run on 60A service?

Right, gc…30A is the plug rating, not the rating for a dryer, which probably has  a 4kw heater = 17-18 A. But ovens and other heating devices do have steady draws, so the wattage, not the plug, rating should be treated as correct.

I live in a prewar coop building and only have 60-amp electrical service.  I am redoing the kitchen and am installing a 30A, 240V electric dryer.  I will have an all-gas range, but would love to have a second oven that is electric – namely one of those “speed ovens”.  I’m considering the 24″ Miele speed wall oven that is 20A, 240V.  I’d also love the matching warming drawer which is 15A, 120V.  Is this possible? Or would it be better to try to get a GE Monogram Advantium speed oven which is 15A, 120V?  Sorry I’m a newbie to all this electrical info!  Thanks in advance!

It’s not rocket science, just add up the loads in watts (a/c:1000, microwave 1200, toaster:1000, fridge: 400, etc and fudge a littles since it’s unlikely you’ll have them all on at once,) then divide by 220 (or 240) to get the total Amp load.  But generally, the dryer’s using 1/3 the capacity. Not much left for other stuff. 60A  is fine for  a 2-bed with even 3 a/cs but without heavy hitters like electric ovens/dryers. The speed oven is just like a  heavy-duty microwave (are you sure it’s 120? seems weird to me; if 240, nogo, as would be the Miele.) And I wouldn’t even cosider the warming drawer, a waste if I ever heard one!

30A, 240V electric dryer is a lot. I would concider gas dryer or ventless washer dryer combo.

More important is the number of outlets.  You’ll never have everything on all at once to draw all 60 amps BUY you may overload one or two 15 or 20 amp outlets.  On a typical 15 amp outlet for example, you will trip the breaker (or blow the fuse) if you run both the toaster oven and the coffee maker!!  So, it’s important to have enough circuits (individual wires with their own breaker (fuse) running to individual outlets.  If you only have lamps and lights you can service more than one room with just one 15 amp circuit.  Yo may be limited by the size of your box in the number of circuits that can be added.   So almost anything is still possible (a number of 20 or 30 amp s40 volt appliances) with the right number of circuits with the load dispersed.

What are the odds you’ll be using your stove, dryer, and warming drawer, along with the everyday stuff, all t the same time? Also – those amperages are a max draw – not nominal use.   When i went with an electric dryer – i specifically had an amperage meter with memory installed inline, because i was nervous too.  It’s never, according to the device’s recall, gone above 17A.   Typical use (when i look at it while the dryer is running) is 12A or so. 60A should be fine IMO if your load is otherwise balanced.   Just be aware that you can’t cook, have every light blazing – the blender blending, an iron ironing, and a hari dryer drying when you do the laundry and you’ll be fine 🙂
