Electric stove for rental apt? Bad idea?
You’ll need a dedicated 220 volt plug to run an electric stove. Renters definitely prefer gas. For me, it is a deal breaker. That said, we have electric in our rental unit. No choice, since the gas line was destroyed.

Hi Brownstoners, So I picked up an electrical stove by mistake from IKEA for a rental apartment. It’s a big nightmare to return in. Are there any particular downsides to electric stoves? Are they more expensive? Do tenants not like them? Thanks Cat

1 – If the power isn’t there to run it, forget about it. The power will cost as much as a new gas range. 2 – Most tenants prefer a gas range, but they don’t like the idea of a $25/ month bill if all they are doing is making coffe and oatmeal for breakfast. I have one unit that has an electric range and that’s my rental pitch on that one oddball unit.

But most small browstones are not setup with separate gas meters, so gas is provided. I assume since OP said ‘by mistake’, the 220v electric was in place, or else that was way short-sighted. Gas stoves are much better than cheap-to-moderate electric burner stoves (as opposed to expensive induction) and cooks prefer them.
