Anyone ever used E. Mule & Sons Plumbing. We are about to hire them (got their name from National Grid) to convert our oil to gas. It’s costly, so I just want to make sure I’m getting the best.

his quote is around $7850, but I it depends on the size of your house, the boiler you get, and the number of radiators you have. He’s also upgrading a few pipes for us. I got another quote from a different plumber for $8000, and a third quote for $12,000\. As you can see, it varies. This guy was someone I got from National Grid as a possible plumber to work with, so I am trusting he’s decent, but I’d like to hear from at least someone he’s worked with before before signing on the dotted line.

I didn’t use E. Mule & Sons, and don’t know anything about them. I DO know that the plumber Nat Grid sent to us in the same circumstance was kind of slimy. I got the feeling some supervisor at Nat Grid was going to get a kickback. His price was high, incidentally. We used Aladdin, on Vanderbilt Ave. They were prompt, clean, and neither the highest nor the lowest bid we received. (This was several years ago, and sorry, I can’t remember the total cost for them, just that they were in the middle.) When part of the newly installed equipment failed 6 months after it was put in, they were here promptly and made the repairs/replacement gratis. They installed a burner and a hot water heater for us. My husband – an architect – also interviewed John Hlad, and was very impressed with him. We ultimately chose Aladdin because they were around the corner from us, which in an emergency, seemed like a good idea. http://www.aladdinplumbingcorp.com/

Also, FYI, NEVER use Ruggiero in Red Hook for anything. He did other work for us, and was terrible.

To become a qualified installer by national grid you just need to register with national grid and show your license. That doesn’t mean that you are qualified to install boilers. Please ensure that they have boiler experience to get the most for your money. And 8,000 is very uncostly. What kind of boiler they are offering? Steam or hot water? What kind of water heater they offering? indirect or standard efficiency? If indirect, what kind of indirect, stainless steel or enamel coated? If standard, is it high recovery or standard recovery? Do they offer mandatory DHW temper valve? Are mandatory  manual reset low water cutoff and manual reset pressutroll offered? Did they tell you you about chimney lining? Do they pour concrete pad for equipment or just setting it on the cinder blocks? Who will deal with oil tanks? There a lot of questions to ask if you really want the best.

My business is a part of that Con Ed referall program and I’m here to tell you, it leaves much to be desired.
The way you become a part of it is you show proof of license and insurance valid at the time of sign-up, and then never again, ever.
Meanwhile, you could be an alcoholic felon, have no idea what you’re doing in the field, and never actually have performed the work in question and still your name circulates throughout the list to homeowners all around the city.
Meanwhile, when I point out that “the guy from National Grid (or Con Ed)” told them something totally untrue or uninformed, I wind up having to do a 20-minute Boiler Lesson 101 in the basement because the homeowner is skeptical of what I have to say because the last guy was so awesome and his price was 1/3 less than mine.  People don’t know how to price what they don’t know how to install. That said, both Aladdin and Hlad are my friends and I’d trust either of them without hesitation to work on anything they choose to bid.
