Hello All, I’m looking at buying a co-op apartment in Brooklyn. The apartment has a wooden deck that I’m fairly certain does not have a permit. I wanted to ask how this will impact homeowners insurance? I assume it will not disqualify me from getting insurance for the apartment as a huge number of Brooklyn apartments have wooden decks. But if a fire starts in the apartment, unrelated to the deck, or a tree crashed through my window, can the insurance company point to the illegal deck as a reason of denying my claim? Just want to be aware of the parameters of an “illegal” wooden deck regarding insurance. Thanks!

never affected me, doubt it will have any bearing on your coverage. window bars, sidewalks and stairs seem to be more hot buttons with ins cos, and it would seem to make sense – they are the ones getting pummeled by lawsuits. A backyard deck prob does not enter their radar.
