I have partially insulated mains in the basement. As the price of those tube-like fiberglass insulators is so high (and it’s a pain to get differnt sizes & joint caps,) I’m thinking of using a 1″ thick foil backed fiberglass tape wrap. Any ideas on how to keep this stuff on (I suspect overlap will be fine, so just at the end of each run?) Aluminum duct tape? Also, how bad is this stuff…I’m planning mask, long sleeves, gloves. Good way to handle it to lower the chance of glass fibres escaping?

Do it right. Do it once. The fiberglass tape stuff is not going to give you the results you are hoping to achieve by insulating in the first place.

The problem is that about 30′ of pipe have been previously wrapped with 1/2″ foil-based stuff. I don’t want to have to rip all that off as it works half-decently, and am planning to add another layer. The first 1″ of fibreglass insulation reduces heat loss to 1/6th (from 150btu to 25 per foot if 2″ pipe)…further insulation has diminishing returns. But for $70 at Home Depot, I can get tape that will bring the combined insulation to 1-1/2″. Don’t see why that ‘won’t give results’ but whatever. All I want to know is what precautions I should take as I’m usually very blase about this sort of thing, but age is making me cautious.
