Smoke & CO detectors

What are the regulations for Smoke & CO detectors placement in a two-family according to NYFD & NYC Building Dept? Should they only be in hallways within min distance of 15′ of bedroom entrance? What about bedrooms? Any input appreciated!

My advice is to get legal advice from a lawyer with a law degree, not a yahoo like me with a screen name.

If you want to follow the code it’s in every bedroom, and outside of the bedrooms, within 15 feet of the bedroom doors. Also, one on each additional floor in the stair hall. In new construction the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are hard-wired and interconnected. If you’re Steve just put one on each desk.

I put a CO detector in the basement and the first floor. I put smoke detectors in basement, each bedroom and each kitchen and hallway. If doors close off living rooms/dining rooms and kitchens, I would put one in each. Also, your insurance company is likely to have much more stringent requirements than does the building code.

and I don’t think you need that many CO detectors. I am really not sure. we have one in this house. you know, where fire safety is concerned, there is nothing wrong with too many. if something ever happens, your insurance company with thank you. I have yet another smoke detect that has been sitting on my desk and now that I saw your post I am going to install it. Steve

why not forget about the regs on something like this and do an overkill. if I lived in a big brownstone (I don’t) maybe one at the top of the stairs at each landing and one at each end of the same hallway and one in each occupied bedroom. these things are so cheap now and some things cannot be replaced. we have extras in our house. Steve
