Old school VW mechanic?

Have finally finished getting our 1972 Super Beetle ready for summer driving here in Brooklyn.  We’ve done most of the work upstate and don’t anticipate any big problems – but would love to have a skilled mechanic ready in case anything goes wrong. Has anyone had a vintage car like this and maybe a recommendation for a great Brooklyn mechanic?

believe it or not, I had a 72 that I took completely apart and restored right down to pulling the engine and tearing it down to install a “short block” with parts from my old engine.  somewhere here I still have my Goodheart Wilcox VW Repair Manual (I also had the “Idiots Guide to Volkswagon Maintenance”) longing for the day I get another.  These things are pretty simple to work on but I bet you none of the kids out there even know what they are today.  I bet they could not even tell you what the best oil to use in one is (straight 30 weight always in all air cooled engines; in the absence of that – 10W-40).  When my VW and I arrived at college down south in 1985, just about every corner had a used car lot full of beetles; when I left there in 1994, not one of those lots remained – and a lot of talent went with them. I am a woodworker now (doors) and really knew these cars inside and out – top to bottom – as I did a ground up restore (pulled the gas tank, engine, seats out, fenders off) put in the rebuilt engine, starter, master cylinder, welded brackets to the front axle,  welded the holes in the body behind the fenders, put a new throttle cable in, new cables for the heat boxes, front wheel bearins, and of course, with the engine went a new clutch.  the only help I got on any of this was asking my high school shop teacher to help me spray the finish on. If you are ever in a pinch, you could try to reach out to me.  I still have all of my tools and do work on all of my own Volvos (VW’s to volvos – that is the progression).  and I have the forementioned book here.  I will tell you the truth, I traded auto work for woodwork becuase of the grease – but if the price is right, I don’t mind getting dirty. Steve

Mitchell’s Auto – Super nice and honest – we use him for our vintage car and have been happy.
