NY Times article on expediters
The Times wrote an interesting article on expditers, [link here](http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/14/realestate/renovating-dont-forget-the-expediter.html?_r=0), very worth reading. Although I definitely want to see the statistics the DOB is using to say that “According to the Buildings Department, the average time between filing a plan package and meeting with an examiner is 3.8 days.” I can only assume they are including professional certifications which get approved the same day, bringing that number way down. They also imply that you file the job and then within a few days sit with the examiner to review the job. Completely incorrect. Typically, the plans are dropped off and then assigned to an examiner (which usually takes a week or two on its own), then the examiner reviews the plans and produces a list of objections, which the architect doesn’t get until a few more weeks, if you’re lucky.

I should clarify – Reviewing arch #1 was fired by the board, as was #2\. #3 disagreed with some key elements of the approval granted by #2\. So despite an approval, things are still somewhat up in the air..

“This man could ruin…. ” is an interesting read. I would say that building board review and approval is now taking longer than DOB review and approval – just spent 1.5 years getting approval for re-installation of a terrace garden on the UES (there were THREE different reviewing architects – all seemed to be getting paid by the word for their reports..)

Yeah we read this when we were going through DOB hell. It took us months just to get our first review scheduled, then weeks to get the objections back the first of three times. The system is beyond broken.

That article is a classic! I also like another one which I won’t link but if you’re interested search for “This Man Could Ruin Your Renovation Plans” also in the NYT.
