Moving to Brooklyn, need ADVICE!

Hi everyone, I recently received a job offer at Maimonides Medical Center in Park Slope.  I need to find an apt. asap as my job starts in 2 weeks! I’m from Philly and have done some research but am in a pinch as I am still working at my other job and I need advice.  For me the biggest issue is convenience to subway line – D line is the stop I believe.  I am also 24 years old, female and single so I like going out to bars, restaurants, coffee shops, clubs etc.. and want to be around an area where there is a lot to do or close to it.  I have friends that live in Manhattan and want to have easy access to getting there as well.  I will have my car, but don’t plan on using it that much unless necessary.  I need advice on areas that are close to the hospital and subway line as well as close in proximity to Manhattan and a nice area thats safe and diverse as well.  I know its a lot and this is last minute but I need your help Brooklynites! I will be living alone too. My budget is 1500-1800 if that helps as far as location wise.  Also, any suggestions on real estate companies/agents?? I have tried looking on craigslist but don’t really trust it that much. Thanks everyone! =)

I would not live in Sunset Park, Bay Ridge or Borough Park if I was 24 (which wasn’t that long ago).  If you want to live along the D (or a line that runs into the D) in a neighborhood that is safe and has places to go out, I would suggest Fort Greene, Park Slope, South Slope, and Greenwood Heights.  South Slope and Greenwood Heights are made-up neighborhood names but you might see that in ads.  Prospect Heights, Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill are also nice but not on the subway line you mentioned.  You should be able to get a studio or small 1 BR for $1500-1800.  Good luck!

Check out http://www.stephaniediamond.com/ and navigate to the listings project. You can subscribe. Lots of listings for short term or roommate things. Yes, you would really benefit from checking out the scene before you commit to anything long term. There are many pros and cons that deserve some understanding, which you won’t have until you have spent some time here. Be a rommate for a month or two or three or five, and figure out what you’d like your life to be here. And look in Sunset Park.

Hi, are you able to come down before you start working there? You can definitely find a nice place in park slope or any of the surrounding neighborhoods that people before me have mentioned. Places are rented here really fast so you have to be ready to put 1mth rent + 1 month security + broker’s fee of anywhere between 1 month rent fee up to 15% of the annual rent down, + application fee. Definitely not cheap renting in NYC. Good luck with everything & welcome to BROOKLYN!

Since you will be working on the D subway line you might consider living in Sunset Park near 36th and 4th Avenue or points east in Sunset Park, or you could live in Bay Ridge (relatively affordable, great food and stores and bars etc., parking is challenging but that’s the case most places) and just head north on the R line then back out on the D line; or you could live in Greenwood Heights north of the D line at 4th Avenue; I can’t speak to how safe these areas are other than Bay Ridge which has a reputation as relatively safe, depending on the block (if you’re too far from the subway I still would be careful walking alone at night, it’s the city after all).  I think of Maimonedes as in Borough Park bordering on Sunset Park (or vice versa) – it’s around 49th Street and 10th Avenue and we were just there for a quick ER visit last weekend (false alarm) and had a very good experience, we live in Bay Ridge and the drive didn’t take long, we found street parking on a Saturday night within a block of the hospital etc. The populations around the hospital include Orthodox communities, plus Latin and Asian populations and generally very diverse.   Parking is challenging but not impossible.  (BTW Park Slope has the R line on 4th Avenue in west Slope, the F subway line in center and south Slope and the 2/3 in north Slope)

I second the advice to do a sublet or short term lease.  You can find ones that you will have to yourself–maybe somebody moved with a few months left on their lease, etc.  Finding a place here long distance is hard and there are a lot of shady realtors and scams.  I took a sublet when I moved here (I think it was 6 weeks) and am 100% sure we would have hated where we ended up renting had we done it before living here and being able to walk the area arounds potential places in person, including at night.     Prospect Heights is good for your age group and a little cheaper than Park Slope.  I live in and like Park Slope for the proximity to Prospect Park, safety, and the abundance of shops and restaurants (not so much nightlife, but there are a few really good bars).  You might find a studio or one bedroom in PH in your budget but if you find something for that price that is actually in Park Slope, it’s probably super tiny or has some other major issues.  Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, and Boerum Hill are all perfectly nice areas but maybe also out of your budget.  Gowanus is okay and seems to be on the up and up.  The further east you go the less nice it is, generally speaking.  Prospect Lefferts and Windsor Terrace are both nice, imo, but pretty sleepy.       Parking will be a pain in most of those nice neighborhoods.  A huge pain.  Until you get an address or closets intersection, don’t trust that an apartment is in the neighborhood it claims.  According to people trying to rent a place, most of Brooklyn is Park Slope.

Congrats on your new job but last I checked Maimonides Medical Center wasn’t in Park Slope. It’s further south off Fort Hamilton Pkwy. I would look for a sublet or roomate situation until you get the lay of the land and know where you want to rent.
