Mount TV above fireplace

Hi zhideng, not sure if this will reach you. Just wanted to check what did you end up doing – did you mount the TV to the fireplace wall (if yes, how?), or did you use the mantel for support. Thanks!

I am interested in mounting an lcd tv above my fireplace. I’ve seen this numerous times in other brownstones but when I asked my contractor he said he did not recommend it. He suggested that I use the mantel to help support the weight. It’s the original plaster wall and I’m not sure where and how many studs there are. What have others on this forum done in terms of mounting the tv?

First, you will be amazed at how light the TV actually is. For smaller ones, they are lighter than the mounting hardware. That said, I would still only mount it to the studs. The mounts come with arms that extend to whatever length you need to find studs. It won’t be a problem. Buy the mounts on Amazon…big selection and much cheaper than getting them at best buy, target, etc

In my house the fireplaces are on the party walls with no studs, just plaster over brick. I’ve mounted heavy book shelves with very long lead shields that go through the plaster into the brick. I guess that would also work for a TV. That being said, mounting a TV over a mantel is awfully high and invites a sore neck,

Yes, agree. Rather high. I too have used the shields for hanging heavy things in the plaster. I dint even use the extra long ones, just short ones into the plaster and epoxied them in. They would certainly hold a TV

I first mounted my shelves with short anchors; they stayed up for a few weeks. It did not end well. They’ve been up with the longer shields for almost 40 years.

It’s much easier to mount things on a non-party wall, with plaster over wood lath. If you screw through the plaster into the lath you often don’t need am anchor.

This would be in a bedroom so the high height might be less of a problem as we will be sitting in our bed. What I am afraid of is what Bob Marvin said about no studs. Any way besides drilling a bunch of holes to find out if I have studs? I have a stud finder but on plaster walls its pretty crappy.

Are there _ever_ studs in brownstone party walls? Not in my experience, but that’s limited to my own house and two previous apartments. Would anyone else like to comment about that?

Is it not brick if it’s the chimney? I would think you’d use masonry screws…those blue ones. You would need to drill through the brick first. But I could be totally wrong.

It’s brick behind the plaster but I was not sure if there were studs. I talked about using masonry anchor screws but he said that the brick might be shallow? Is that possible?

Is this an old house? Does “shallow” mean he thinks it’s just a brick facade? I’ve never seen that on an old chimney, but I also haven’t opened walls in THAT many houses. If you have anchors to go through the plaster and brick and they support the right amount of weight, I don’t see why you would have to have the extra support of the mantel. There are a couple of other issues though. Is this a working fireplace? The heat won’t be good for the tv. Also, will the cords just hang or do you have to carve out some space to keep them in the wall?

Its an old house, I dont have the exact year built so its one of those 1899 dated houses. I’ve seen references to the house in old brooklyn eagle articles that date to around that time. I was not sure what he meant by shallow either. None of the fireplaces are working anymore just decorative. As for the chords I was just going to wrap around the side and cover it with small sheath I will make.
