LOOKING FOR SOURCE FOR PORCH COLUMNS

I just rebuilt my porch in Ditmas Park, and removed the old round columns. However, I think they are only 5 ft tall and you would need to build a base. Structurally, they appear to be in good shape but the paint needs to be stripped. If interested, let me know how to contact you.

Anyone know where I can buy new or used wood porch columns? I need round columns 7 1/2 tall with a diameter of 10″-12″. Any leads much appreciated.

There are a number of places that you can find online that make a wide varity of columns and will ship them relatively cheaply. Your columns need to be structural. Not all of them are. Also, consider fiberglass ones. Indistinguishable from wood and will never rot. we do not see too many of these in the area as the architecture does not lend itself to them. I would start with the salvage yards outside of the city – particularly in areas with a lot of 1920s’-50’s housing stock where they may have used these. also, do not focus on getting your height, if what you find is too short, you can build them up – or down – with blocks as these were often on pillars anyway. Home depot used to carry fibreglass versions of these. Steve

look at what dibs says. now the fibreglass ones are not structural but allow you to slip a large piece of wood or metal column down the center.

If you do decide to take a trip outside of the city, Hoffman’s Barn in Red Hook (upstate-not Bklyn neighborhood) usually has a decent selection of them. You can also try Zaborski’s in Kingston.
