HORIZONTAL Pocket Door?
cmu – many of these are awesome and clever, but I still don’t see a “pocket door” that I’m envisioning. All of the pictured mechanisms either open directly to the open roof or are the enclosures, themselves. I am picturing a 200-300 sqft room of mostly glass, on the roof, that opens up to the outdoor roof deck. I want the door to be a pocket door so it doesn’t interfere with the floor of the room.

Just daydreaming here, but… As I envision our future floating staircase to the roof deck enclosure/seating area, I wonder if anyone has seen a horizontal pocket door (maybe frosted glass in frame) that slides to close the large hole in the ceiling at the top of the stairs. A sunroof of sorts. It’s function would be to keep the heat or a/c from totally escaping to the bulkhead during periods Of non-use. It would be big, but with good sliders, it could be smooth. Just curious if it’s been done locally.

I have yet to see that but I’m sure it could be done. It would work like a large drawer. You may want to check out Simons hardware for slides to hold that kind of weight. You would need to drop the ceiling a bit to make a pocket. I gather your roof deck, enclosed area, has a glass roof so that your pocket door will have plenty of light? Depending on your taste, a contemporary frosted glass or decorative glass panel would look great. Recently I built this skylight frame and tin ceiling. It added lots of drama to a boring space. Good luck with your project.

Cool work. Thanks for the Simons rec. I do envision a contemporary frosted glass. And yes, the enclosure would be mostly glass – a big reason I would want the option to cut it off from heat loss.

Yeah-gotta look online. It’s important that it is a pocket door, so when it’s opened, it doesn’t interfere with the enclosed roof space. The one pictured in your link is beautiful, but wouldn’t work.

they had fire doors like what you mention in old factory and industrial spaces. they would be steel and heavy and held up by rope which would burn allowing the door to drop. I would bet there are some left in the city. Steve
