I work in a automobile garage and we have a small tool shed adjecent to our garage. The shed id not opened very often as we keep only old and worn out machine parts there, but now it has become the home for a raccoon family. We noticed this only last week and we have trying all possible method to drive them away but none of them are working. We are also worried about the fact that it may carry rabies. Can anyone here suggest a method to get rid of them? We considered calling a raccoon removal service but then decided to try one last time by ourselves. Please tell me if you have any ideas. Thanks.

Racoons are adaptive, intelligent, social, and nocturnal. We coexist with them in Brooklyn, rarely with any problems. But they scavenge, and if they appear during the day out in the open, I presume they are probably sick, or have eaten poison. I had just one of them living under my house in Wisconsin many years ago, where I worked as a blacksmith. I used a “have-a-heart” trap, expecting to easily catch it and release him or her in a state forest. I baited the trap, near the Racoon’s favorite spot. For three nights, I could hear the trap slam shut, but each morning, the bait and the racoon were gone. On the 4th attempt, I placed the trap near an open window and watched as an enormous, fat racoon waddled in to the trap, and calmly let the door close behind. Holding a chicken thigh in its teeth, it reached out the wire wall, pulled the lever, opened the door and left, as easily as you get a snack out of your refrigerator. I got it on the next attempt by sleeping with my shoes on, and the window open. When I heard the trap door close, I jumped out the window. The fat racoon was not in any hurry, and didn’t look at all surprised to see me. After all, I was by then a familiar house mate and provider. But then, it reached for the lever and found I had already wired it shut. I released him about 20 miles away. A client of mine, during a renovation of an empty house near Greenwood Cemetery, also captured a racoon in a have-a-heart trap, but mostly he caught stray cats. Cutting off the food supply by moving your garbage cans inside, and cleaning up more, is probably not an option. The racoons probably have many ways of gathering food. I hope you can catch and release them, rather than kill them, but you may have to get close to them, not one time, but on many dark, cold nights. Brooklyn racoons may be more afraid of people than rural Wisconsin ones, quicker to run, and more alert to your movements.

It’s against the law in NYC for individuals to deal w/ racoons. You can get a Hav-a-Hart trap & bait it w/ canned cat food (though you risk getting cats instead) or fruit & then take it into the countryside somewhere to release it but if you have more than one, you’ll have to have an equal number of traps ($50 or so on Amazon). The easiest solution is to bring in a pest control company. I priced them last summer & Empire had the best deal. The mayor announced a new animal policy recently so there might be a better resource now but I found the only ‘help’ given on the NYC.gov site was a list of licensed pest controllers.

A friend of mine had a similar problem in the garden of her Brownstone last year. She got traps, went out into her garden dressed like Granny Clampett in her schmatta, baited the traps with crucifers, and then had to get more traps because the spread she’d laid out beckoned other raccoons from neighboring gardens to join the feast. After holding her hostage in her house for a spell, eventually the food worked to trap the raccoons. And she found a lovely couple to drive them upstate in their Mercedes SUV and release them in the wilderness. True story.

Wait, the food held Granny Clampett hostage in her brownstone? You might want to fix the grammar. I hear Granny’s a bit of a stickler for these sorts of things.

my father has always caught all sorts of things in have-a-heart traps including racoons – so what people are suggesting is not off base if you are the type who does not recoil from creatures who may get a but nasty. what would concern me more is the rabies idea; a few years ago it was reported that 26 rabid racoons had been caught in Central Park. Also, be careful with the feces. A number of years ago a girl camping in the Hudson Valley died of rabies and it had been suggested that she ingested the dust from dried feces from an animal carrying rabies. As a contractor, when I work in house, I pay attention to signs that animals may have been in basements or attics or other places out of these fears. the one reason I do not like to involve the city in this stuff is because we end up with some nut head politician trying to politicize the racoons. it happen here in Queens where I live when the council person sponsored a bill that would have these animals relocated. As one poster says, we co exist with these animals. when the council person sponsored that bill, I wanted her relocated. Be careful. Oh, I forgot to mention, my father brought young one home for me as a pet when I was a teenager. It shredded my jeans trying to climb my legs to get the food I had in my hand for it. And they can get nasty when cornered. the rabies thing is not a joke even if they do not have symptoms. Steve

It’s not so much rabies in the feces as it is various kinds of worms that are almost impossible to eradicate: boiling water poured on all the surrounding area is advised by most health & pest sites.

Got one more solution. I used to be in the commercial roofing business and a customer had raccoons burrowing on the roof and causing leaks. After the normal garden variety of attempts, we bought huge bottles of tabasco suace and spread it liberally over the area. I’ve never witnessed it but apparently they like to lick their feet. They never came back. cheers Matt R www.nyc-hs.com
