Degamba Wood Stripping
I haven’t used Degamba but have had wood stripped. Depends on what you are using, where you are sleeping, and whether there are children in the house. I have used Zip Strip, heat gun, Peel Away 1 and 7, and Soy Gel at various times. I would not do any of this during the heating months, because all windows have to be open. In addition, we arranged for our child to be out of the house while the stripping was going on, and also kept all the stripping on one floor at a time, and did not allow the child to go to that floor until two or three weeks after the stripping was over, when all the gunk and the neutralizer were dry and the smell was gone. Also, I wouldn’t allow a heat gun at all — it’s toxic if you have any lead paint — even outside. And if you do do stripping outside, make sure the windows are CLOSED.

Hi Guys, I received quotes from a few wood strippers to strip the moldings and mantles on our parlor floor and am investigating Degamba a bit more. Has anyone used them recently for a multi-room stripping job? I am trying to figure out how disruptive it is to have them stripping the wood inside an occupied house. The entire area will be sealed off for the duration of the job but if the fumes are very, very strong we will need to figure out how to be out of the house completely. Would be very appreciative of anyone’s experience with them. Thanks! fitch

Hi – I have not used Degamba but I recently had all the mouldings stripped in my front and rear parlors and dining room. The wood strippers used Peel Away 1 and then Rock Miracle for the harder stuff. I lived in the house while it was happening and can offer some advice for how to protect yourself from the chemical fumes. I bought a negative air machine to help with the dust and fumes. It cost about $800 which seems like a lot but was money well spent. I figured it will be cheaper in the end to buy the air machine rather than move out of the house. We still had to seal off the rooms with plastic but the negative air machine really helped to contain the dust and fumes. If you have a short term project, maybe you can rent one rather than buying it. We are doing a fairly large renovation while living in the house, so the negative air machine is being used wherever there is any dusty work happening.

Thanks for the response! Would you mind sharing who you used to strip the wood in your house? Were you happy with them and their work?

I have used then and they did overall a good job. however make sure the terms are well defined. For example, they don’t fix any missing or broken details unless it’s clearly agreed before the job. They can fix it but I found too expensive as it adds up quickly, so be very meticulous going over every detail and giving it in writing to them.

We had the woodwork in one room stripped (fireplace mantel, picture rail, double pocket doors + moldings, bay window, baseboards, plus the moldings for two additional doors in the room. Damn Victorians and their many doors!) They used zip strip for most of the stuff, with a bit of Peel Away 1\. The process took 3 days and the fumes were not bad at all. There wasn’t any dust, but the process is very messy. A few things we learned: – Don’t strip the picture molding. We did and lost most of the detail, because it turns out it that ours was manufactured using animal-based glue (I know… made me sad). Anyway, the paint stripper will eat through the glue and all the detail will fall off. – Be very specific about protecting your walls and floors. This stuff (zip strip) will eat through plaster and you’ll have to skim coat. Make sure the walls are protected, unless you were planning on skim coating anyway.
