Deck flooring
We have an Ipe deck and it still looks great 15 years on. Every two years we pressure wash it, then stain with Cabot Timber Oil in jarrah brown. Comes out like new.

We are having a deck built. The frame will be iron, we are now exploring what type of flooring to use: fieldstone or wood. If wood, we can’t afford ipe and hate the pre treated Home Depot wood. Any suggestions?

There aren’t many choices that are locally available. You can easily find clear and knotty cedar and pressure treated pine…they require yearly maintenance, and they will both degrade quickly anyway. You can use mahogany, but real mahogany is more expensive than Ipe, and the wood that is marketed as Mahogany…isn’t. I don’t trust composite decking. There are so many brands that come and go (out of business). The most well known being trex. They have been hit with at least 3 class action suits by unhappy deck owners…crumbling, black mold, and other issues. There are other South American hardwoods that are cheaper than Ipe, but you’ll have to order them online. Then there is cement, tile, and iron (diamond plate, slats, and grating). I only build Ipe decks, and…yes…it’s pricey, but will outlast you. Buy the best, and only cry once. Steve

you can probably get away with 1″ thick ipe. did you price it out that way? it’s such a hard and heavy wood that anything more than that is overkill. does anyone know a more durable finish than profin? it almost just seems like a oil because it wears off so quickly.
