Chimney in Brooklyn brownstone

Need your help please. The 1889 brownstone I’m buying in Brooklyn (full gut renovation by the seller) has two working fireplaces with UNLINED chimney flues. These will be gas (not wood burning). I was told that NYC fire codes state that each chimney flue MUST be lined with clay tile or steel lining as well as a requiring a smoke test. Is this the case? Has anyone had any experience with this? Costs? Thanks again very much. Happy new year everyone!

Hi and thank you. The law is for new or pre-existing chimneys…or it does not matter?

Hello and thank you very much. It’s an existing fireplace but its currently non working for many years. House is from 1889 or so. Builder is trying to tell me that fireplace is fine ( so he won’t have to spend $ to line). Dangerous to have gas vent into unlined 1889 brick…yes? I want to do everything 100% to code. I think I read that’s it’s NYC fire code that fireplaces must be lined. Can anyone find where this is written? I’ve emailed NYC DOB. Have not heard from them yet. Thank you very much.

As MP stated, no gas appliances are allowed in unlined chimneys, and you would be a fool to try to get around code. Call A and A or A and J chimney, both really honest outfits for a price for relining with stainless liners. It will probably run in the $2-3000 range depending on the distance from fireplace to roof. You may also need an engineer to sign off on the job, since chimney affadavits from installers are no longer accepted for boilers, although that may not be the case for gas fireplaces http://www.ajchimney.com/ http://www.aafireplacenyc.com/

In some jurisdictions {NOT NYC} gas fire places don’t have to be vented at all and are considered as safe as gas stoves, so perhaps the existing chimneys are adequate. Are existing working gas fireplaces with brick chimneys “grandfathered in”? That being said, I have five non-working gas fireplaces, whose gas pipes were cut, along with those for the gaslights, many years ago. My chimneys that would vent them are not in good shape and, personally, I wouldn’t dream of running new gas lines to them without also relining my flues.

It’s true. You cannot vent into brick-and-mortar anymore. We’re finally making an effort to catch up to Europe, where they have 1/5 the carbon monoxide events we have in the United States. I very much support the new Codes on this stuff. www.72fLLC.com
