I am considering buying rolled bamboo fence to put over a chain link fence as an easier way to create some privacy and enhance the look of yard. Any comments on how bamboo holds in our weather? I would use a wood sealer to help but I hear conflicting reports on durability for bamboo fence.

  1. I did exactly the same thing in my backyard, using 6’x8′ panels from Cali Bamboo. They look great and the company was excellent to work with. I don’t have caps and I didn’t seal the bamboo. Installation is easy – use plastic zip ties from Home Depot – but you’ll need two people. The panels are heavy and awkward.

  2. If you want I’ll email you a photo of their current condition. imby at nyc. rr. com

Attached by wrapping/threading wire between individual pieces.

5′ x 8′ sections are easily lifted but you will need two people for installation. We unrolled the sections and bent them flat on the ground first before installing on fence.

  3. Pending your ‘local’ weather conditions, give or take 5 years of good use. (How exposed is it to wind, direct sun etc.)

Five years in, my ‘boo has now deteriorated to the point of fuglyness but it would have lasted longer. The dang september tornado did a number on it.

  4. I like the look. How are they attached to the chain link fence, and are they heavy?

  5. I could use another twenty feet. We got ours from some place in NJ but it had to be sent back twice as it was badly damaged…. just wrapped in plastic via UPS.

That website you mention looks pretty good!

I talked to the artist assistants who installed the Starn Twins big bamboo sculpture on the MET Museum’s rooftop… all their bamboo came from Georgia.

  6. We have them- no caps. They weather well- will turn greyish, and will still be strong even when cracking a bit. What sources are you using to buy- we need some more this summer, and haven’t been able to find good prices locally.

  7. I am planning to do the same. Can the material be purchased locally? Thanks

  8. I second that notion (IMBY) I too have seen them start to crack open when the ends are not capped, I wouldn’t recommend sealing them either, you should be good without it.
