Bathroom Renovation
The Mrs. and I are looking to gut renovate our bathroom sometime during the summer and we’re looking for a contractor. We live in a detached single family home in Queens. I know there are a few things that I am specifically looking for. The floor joists are definitely going to need to be sistered….

I know there are a few things that I am specifically looking for. The floor joists are definitely going to need to be sistered. I know this b/c when I did the kitchen just below, I noticed the joists were cut to run the drain lines. That’s something that’s an absolute must be done in my mind.
Also, I’m planning on capping off the radiator and just putting in radiant floor heating.
It’s a really small bathroom (5×8), so the Mrs. would like to go a little bit higher end. I am well aware you get what you pay for so I’m asking before hand for a reliable contractor who does quality work? Any recommendations?
Also, the rest of our home is recently renovated so I want someone who’s going to care for my home and not have debris flying everywhere.
Any advice. Thanks in advance.

Try Rick Ladd, http://RickLaddBrooklyn.com , a frequent poster on this site. I used him to renovate a bathroom in my brownstone in Sunset Park. He had the keys, kept it clean throughout and did great work.

Yes, definatly use the Laticrete epoxy grout. It is worth the $$$.
We are not currently available for a job such as yours, but bear in mind that the waste line to the toilet restricts where it can be located, and depending on the direction the joists run, there may not be an alternative to crossing joists, umless there is a dropped ceiling below. You usually don’t want to have to move the large waste T on the main waste line, so oftentimes the height is what it is.
A well supported floor is necessary for a satisfactory tile job. Make sure on final tiling that joints where flat surfaces meet are caulked not grouted, unless you utilize Schluter style transition strips.
Forgive me if this is simplistic, but make sure the Hardi-Backer Board is correctly fastened to the walls and floor. It floats on the thin set, it does not get screwed to the joists (just to the subfloor).
We recommend Laticrete epoxy grout on th efloor and in the shower. It definitely is a pain, but definitely worth it. Tile outside the shower on the walls can be regular grout, just figure a transition so they don’t touch visually.

Contact Damian Sherlock at 917-698-1638. He actually lives in Queens and did our building Lobby reno in Brooklyn. Very easy to work with and his crew was super clean and responsible. Was a real pleasure to work with on a fairly big project. I never seen his bathroom work but I have a feeling he has enough references for that as he has been in business for over 15 years and the guys that worked on our building were working for him for over 10 and are really happy with him as the boss. They were great as well and were very sensitive to my anal tendencies. Overall great experience and great end result.
