We mounted a LCD television above our unused fireplace. The wires hanging down are very unsightly. So, we were thinking of drilling through the masonry behind the television, to hang the wires down through the chimney flue. The cables would attach to our PS3 and cable box, which we’d place in the fireplace hearth.
(Obviously, we dont’ use the fireplace.)

Is this safe? And/or, will it work?

  1. There is actually molding you can use to hide the wires. I did it for my television. I don’t know how to attach a photo but if you email me at stacey0768 at aol dot com I can show you what it looks like.

  2. Assuming that the flues are not in use, and never will be, you can drill fairly esily through a mortar joint with a masonry bit.

Most older brick flues are only one brick thick towrds the room, so you should be able to see light shine through if you look up the flue.

  3. It might work, assuming the flue isn’t lined. Big code violation and difficult to repair come resale time.
