My home has a driveway next to it which people seem to love to park in front of, despite the curb I painted yellow (and yes, I know painting the curb’s not legal either) and my car sitting there in the driveway . It’s getting pretty annoying– and then last night someone pulls INTO my driveway (though still sticking out halfway onto the curb) and goes into the big apt building next door for a few hours.

I know I can call the cops and once it’s ticketed, I can have them towed, but the one time I called it took them hours to get here (and yes, my situation is clearly no emergency) and by that time the car was gone.

So my question is- can I stick those annoying hard-to-remove stickers on people’s windows? Yes, it’s petty. Yes, it doesn’t really solve the problem. But yes, it will help me feel better when it does happen and hopefully make them think twice about doing it again.

I saw them for sale on a website and I was tempted.

Ok, you may respond now- I am prepared for the hate mail I may get for this post.

  1. is a 16-lb sledgehammer is a creative solution?

I kid. post a “24-hour active driveway” sign w/ the number of the towing company that’ll scoop up offending vehicles.

  2. At coopfornow: In my defense it was a pretty big intersection, and I was young and foolish. Now I just have them ticketed and towed to the Bronx.

  3. Bklyn Fire Alarm Guy, though I love creative solutions, this particular action escalated a problem for you into a hazard for the general traffic. Not nice either.

  4. First off id take photos of the offending vehicles. I would hook up with a tow company and have anyone in your driveway towed immediately.once they tresspass you dont need a ticket to have them removed. For those who park int he street call the traffic department dirctly at the navy yard they come quicker than the cops

  5. Seriously, assuming the curb cut is legal, could you have the city put up a no parking sign? It might deter a few of them.

OTOH, why is it that much of a deal if someone parks there for a few minutes (not a few hours) anyway???

  6. It’s vandalism. The only solution is ticketing and tow.
That said, I feel your pain: I woke up one morning to head to work to find a car parked over my driveway, knowing that calling to have it ticketed would take too long I called a buddy who drove a tow truck. He picked up the car, dragged it up the block, and dumped it diagonal in the middle of the intersection. I made it to work on time.

  7. Yes, I had the same immediate thoughts as Bob. Those stickers are typically not used by NYPD’s ticketing/towing process, especially if there is a sticker but no ticket – you’d be inviting retaliation.

  8. While I’m sure you can sticker them you might consider how jerks like that might retaliate. After all, they know where YOU live.

    Call the cops.
