My home has a driveway next to it which people seem to love to park in front of, despite the curb I painted yellow (and yes, I know painting the curb’s not legal either) and my car sitting there in the driveway . It’s getting pretty annoying– and then last night someone pulls INTO my driveway (though still sticking out halfway onto the curb) and goes into the big apt building next door for a few hours.
I know I can call the cops and once it’s ticketed, I can have them towed, but the one time I called it took them hours to get here (and yes, my situation is clearly no emergency) and by that time the car was gone.
So my question is- can I stick those annoying hard-to-remove stickers on people’s windows? Yes, it’s petty. Yes, it doesn’t really solve the problem. But yes, it will help me feel better when it does happen and hopefully make them think twice about doing it again.
I saw them for sale on a website and I was tempted.
Ok, you may respond now- I am prepared for the hate mail I may get for this post.
OP here– all great points from replies.
It is a legal driveway and curbcut and the driveway runs the full depth of the lot next to the house so this is not some easy to miss parking pad or something.
I’m not looking for problems- just frustrated. A blocked driveway at 7am when you need to get to work is a real pisser. I bought this place in good part because it had a legal driveway.
Calling it vandalism is debateable (sp?) from one article I’ve read- its not destroying or damaging property.
I probably won’t do it, but signs and paint don’t seem to do the job for some.
A few minutes I don’t mind and I have never said no to anyone who’s asked to park because they’re moving or need a spot for a visit- I’m not a control freak, just seems incredibly disprespectful and selfish to block someone else in because you don’t want to circle the block for another few minutes. I don’t really think there is any reasonable defense for doing it.
Nails, DIBS? I like the way you think.
You have to keep in mind that you don’t entirely own your driveway. There is a public right of way on your driveway and sidewalk and you don’t own the street in front of your driveway. Yes, I can put a driveway in front of my building and paved away my lawn like you have it – but I won’t. I know that my property (although it belongs to me) is a shared community asset and is more valuable to my community and especially to my direct neighbors as a lawn with parking on the street in front. This, it seems you have not learned yet. But, to answer your question – I would xerox (because you will have to do this a lot it seems) a note with a polite message that asks to please don’t park here (make it distinctive so people read it) and put it on their window. From my experience people will respond if you ask and if you are polite about it.

people on my block put 3 big orange cones in the street in front of their driveways. it seems to work.
I always figured you’d live on a white trash block, randi.
You go ahead and sticker cars, we’ll read it here.

I second getting in good with a towing company in addition to a “don’t even think of parking here” type of sign.
Yes, if the vehicle(s) are repeat offenders, why not leave a sweet note under their wiper? Also try the active driveway sign. I’d also suggest painting 2 yellow lines into the street marking the boundaries of your driveway. Yes it’s illegal but very effective. Hell why not, you already painted the curb illegally!

Instead of sticking something to the car, couldn’t you just leave a paper on the windshield, “please do not park here”.
I have signs that I printed up in the office on regular paper and it says.
“You are hogging up 2 parking spaces”. In big bold letters.
I keep them in my car and when I am looking for a parking spot in my neighborhood and see someone that took up 2 spaces, I leave the sign under their wipers.
If nothing else they will know that someone else knows they took up 2 spaces. It makes me feel good and I am not damaging their property……
I suppose I would be tempted to do the same (I don’t have a driveway or a car) but I would be concerned about the repercussions. Would they maybe do something to your car…or your house. I don’t know…some people are nuts.
