We just finished painting our cabinet doors. They look great but they’re already getting dinged up. Can anyone recommend a sealant to protect them? Preferably something that can be rubbed instead of brushed (since we worked our butts off to spray rather than brush the doors).

  1. also, don’t dismiss brush on. We often brush products on – or sometimes use foam rollers – and rub them out with fine paper (wet) or steel wool or automotive compound and it becomes very difficult to tell brush from sprayed. with certain products, it helps to add reducer to aid leveling and retard drying; Charlie can tell you what thinners to use with what products. Be aware that they are a business-to-business dealer and may only be able to sell consumer products to a homeowner.

  2. I hope you sprayed them with oil. Rub them with wax, butchers or minwax, using real fine steel wool. Or, wipe it on with a rag, let it dry and rub it out.

I imagine you can put an automotive type clearcoat over this. Talk to this guy: Charlie Hoey at Abbot Paints in Greenpoint. (718) 349-2112. Abbot sells product to wood finishers and has all of the things your corner paint store will not tell you exist. Tell Charlie Stetson sent you.

  3. make a wiping varnish by thinning the epifanes 50% with mineral spirits, and you can easily wipe it on.

I used it for all of my doors in a house and fell in love with it. I brushed it on but didn’t notice any strokes. The one reviewer on the site says he put it on with a foam brush and it looked like it was sprayed.
