Hi,
I currently own a condo in Park Slope (7th street between 5th and 6th). I am considering moving to a bigger condo in Greenwood Heights ( 20-22 st between 5th and 6th).
Can someone tell me what the neighborhood is like? Is it a big change from Park Slope? Or is it just a longer walk to everything?
Thanks!
I would take DP over Greenwood heights any day, if you’re looking at Fringe nabes.
JFRD216, BTW brooklynian.com has a pretty solid GWH forum where you can read up on the area and post questions. You can find it here: http://bk.ly/uRM
And theirs the Concerned Citizens of Green-Wood Heights news group: http://bk.ly/uRN
Always a good resource.
wow…I lurk on this forum a lot and quite a few of the folks here have very snarky comments about “other” neighborhoods (I call this POV ‘neighborhoodism’). ANYWAY I’m condo shopping and understand that if I want more bang for my buck I need to look at so called fringe neighborhoods. A resource that I’ve been using to look up information about areas I don’t have much familiarity with is Nabewise.
We moved from Ft. Greene, brownstone central, to the area in 2004. While I will agree with the eclectic mixed stock comments of the architecture (a diversity I actually like), the area is mostly well maintained. Just because a old frame house has vinyl siding does not meet it’s inhabitants don’t care. Out frame has a gut reno interior, with no $$ left over for the exterior for now.
My wife and I love the area: proximity to both Sunset Park and Park Slope…mixed population of old skoool Polish and Italians, immigrants from South America and Mexico, ex-pat Brooklynites who were priced out of neighborhoods and of course the newbie condo owners. Du to the last two groups, the amenities have improved, more bars and restaurants have opened, shopping has improved along 4th Ave and yes, you do need to header north for more higher end needs.
The 25th St. or Prospsect Ave stops are fine. The possibilities of express trains from Atlantic or Dekalb make commutes short.
Crime is very low, mostly quality of life issues. And of course you have the 478 acres of Green-Wood Cemetery at your door step.
And soot? Unless you live under the Gowanus, I have not idea what that’s about.
Which building are you looking into?
Welcome!
P.S. I’m not sure where all the soot is, or the proximity to the BQE is that the first commentor cites, but it’s definitely no where near where you are looking.
with a bike, everything in the slope is highly accessible from greenwood. 21st between 5th and 6th — i doubt the soot situation that architerrorist wrote of is very much different than 7th street between 5th and 6th. lack of greenery? you’re right next to greenwood cemetary, which is very, very green. but you should just spend some time in the neighborhood, at different hours and on different days of the week, to get a feel.
there’s not as much uber yuppie garbage in that area as there is in park slope, tho the plague is slowly creepy on down.
*rob*
my girlfriends family has lived in greenwood for over 30 years. its quiet, not much really going on. the blocks are quiet, the people are friendly and its a safe area. you will just have to walk a bit longer to get to your park slope spots. i would definitely move in greenwood if the opportunity arose.
Not sure if the other two commenters live in the neighborhood. We made the move from a brownstone coop on a fairly prime north slope block to a house in Greenwood and have really never looked back.
The area you are talking about, particularly 21st street has enough street trees to not feel barren. There is currently a focus on planting street trees across the neighborhood. Last year, they planted along 6th up to 22nd or so. They have marked our block on 18th this year.
There are no brownstones, but there are some well maintained woodframes, and it seems that more people are renovating all the time.
The older school condo on 21st has a great community.
The neighborhood has enough services to keep your walks short, and it’s close enough to the Slope and other hoods to get things there too.
We found that we liked the proximity to the 7th avenue strip near 16th street with Fonda, Grab, Beer Table, etc…
We’ve found the community to be really nice, quiet, friendly, relatively safer than the slope, and in terms of services and such, constantly improving.
Suggest you just take a walk there between 6-8PM when people are shuffling home from work, or on a Sat morning-
Great CSA at the park on 18th and 6th every Sat Morning- take a look one day. Good zoned school. New dog run. R train at prospect or 25th. Nice set of shops on 5th avenue between Prospect and 18th- coffee, baked goods, bagel store, grocery store, wine store, beer store, sandwich shop, diner, polish buthcer…
Best of luck.
