Hi,
I currently own a condo in Park Slope (7th street between 5th and 6th). I am considering moving to a bigger condo in Greenwood Heights ( 20-22 st between 5th and 6th).
Can someone tell me what the neighborhood is like? Is it a big change from Park Slope? Or is it just a longer walk to everything?
Thanks!
I want to take back my idiotic comment about yuppies. I agree with DitmasSnark.
Rick is definitely not a broker. He did some work for us, when we first got our house. Super nice guy, and he’s right about Sunset Park. When we bought our house, we found that the houses were cheaper in Greenwood at that time, but we looked hard at the blocks he’s mentioning. The price, and the relative proximity to the other neighborhoods we frequent pushed us in favor of our current spot. The good news is now that we live here, we go out on neighborhood adventures not just back to the slope, but we’re also a strategic walk or car ride to red hook (just across hamilton ave now!) and also to sunset park for awesome food.
Hey Rick- even you said that greenwood was a smart move back then! And by the way, the really insecure slopers still insist that where we live is actually sunset park, so you can theoretically live in three or four neighborhoods at once if you move here:
Greenwood (heights?)
(South) Park Slope
Sunset Park
Gowanus (depending on your proximity to 3rd ave and the prospect expressway)
It really opens up your networking opportunities. 🙂
p.s. just got back from Laurentino’s (up in the 20s) on 5th, with a yummy bag of italian pastries…pastry chef used to work at Veniero’s, I think. That is another awesome neighborhood resource you should check out on your walks. Have a pastry there, and then go get a fancy drink at Quarter.
Thanks for all the help! It gave me a much better idea of what the Greenwood Heights neighborhood is all about. Most of my fears (irrational cause I’m a nut case LOL) have subsided. We had a really nice stroll through the neighborhood this past Sunday evening and were impressed with the vibrancy of the area . It seems worth the move in order to be able to have a more impressive condo and and extra spending cash money. Hope to be you new neighbor!
AJ, I’m not a realtor or a seller. I’m a contractor. However, I do own a house on this block and I would like more people to consider Sunset Park. It is well known that 47th street between 5 & 6 ave is one of the best blocks here but there are many others. If you’re in the market for a brownstone, this block is special. Just take a trip over here or google street map it and you will see that it looks every bit as nice as a brownstone Park Slope block.
Denton, Union Market is off our list (price), but I hear the new whole foods-ish store on 17th St. and 4th Ave. has some nice options. Will have to check it out.
Don’t get me wrong, I love UM, just a bit pricey at time for day-to-day shopping. Rossman’s on 26th St and 3rd Ave is the bomb…but no UM.
“47th street between 5 & 6 ave is one of the best blocks and there are 3 houses available at this time.”
Rick, are you the seller or the realitor?
North of SSP is great (GWH), though explore the whole area.
If you’re cool with the fringe you may want to consider Sunset Park. Perhaps you could swing a brownstone with a rental unit? 47th street between 5 & 6 ave is one of the best blocks and there are 3 houses available at this time.
Greetings, we moved from 5th Ave/5th street coop to 19th street house in 2007. We are quite happy. Yes, you do not have the density of services that you have in the center Slope but there are enough to keep most people in wine and cheese. There are several good restaurants, many fairly new.
There is less dust by me than there was when I lived near 4th Ave in the center slope.
To say there is no greenery in the nabe is ridiculous. Not only are you very close to Greenwood Cemetery, you are not much farther from Prospect Park than you used to be, just a different part of it.
The nabe is very safe and much more friendly than PS. rob has a point also. Behind the working class roots of the nabe, there is a lively bohemian artsy scene, I sometimes say like WB without the trust funds. STop in any local bar or restaurant in the evening and you’ll see what I mean.
It’s true the architecture in general is not what it is in PS, but if you ever buy a house you’ll find that it is a lot easier to do what you want with it unmolested. Like AJ, we did a complete gut of ours and now we have exactly what we want.
The biggest problem left is the food issue. Union Market on 13th & 7th is really the closest good food store, so I’ll often get off the ‘F’ train and walk down 7th to take advantage.
Fringe=polite word for where the yuppies don’t live.
