We’re considering putting skylights on the top floor of our brownstone in Brooklyn Heights at the same time we have our roof replaced.

Does anyone know if this requires DOB approval?

If so, what is required?

Does anyone have a reference to a website / form I can use to file the application?

Thanks!

  1. To CGar. Why not self certify ? These days if you self certify a project is a lot of times commiting suicide with the DOB as they will never stop auditing either during the project otr at tome of signof. When they audit at time of signoff a lot of times they will hit you with numerous violations which can hurt your pocket alot.

  2. who do you use for the new roof? our co-op (also in BH) needs to redo the roof and we are looking at contractors etc. from what i understand you need to file with DOB and LPC for the roof replacement and in our plans we have the existing skylights. in your case i’d just put your new, planned ones and it shouldn’t be an issue, esp as you are filing anyway.

  3. Is that your place Biff? Very nice. For some reason I thought you lived in a co-op with a doorman.

Well, I mean a doorman downstairs, not that you lived with him.

  4. Thanks to everyone who responded, except Pete. 🙂

I now know so much more about the process than I did when I first posted this and appreciate all the feedback.

  5. Sorry, but you need a permit from DOB, to get that you must file with Landmarks first. If it cannot be seen from the street, it will just get approved. You are cutting an opening through structural memebers. Hire an architect, they will guide you though the process. Whoever does the installation will need the proper license and insurance to be able to pull the permit.

  6. If you have a flat roof that is not visible from the street, I would listen to the roofers and just put the skylights in. And I would never consider an unlicensed roofer for anything.

  7. If you use the space with any regularity, don’t scrap the project — the amount of light it brings in will COMPLETELY transform the space. You’ll love it.

Of course, it will also let in quite a bit of heat in Summer. I strongly recommend some kind of shading system.
