It’s truly amazing how the South Slope Latino community is so ready to hijack the SW corner of the park every holiday weekend for their enormous bar-b-ques. Even more fascinating though is the amount of plastic crap they leave thrown about for the rest of us to find the next morning.

  1. @sloper77, I frequent Prospect Park, and the surrounding areas. I lived in Crown Heights for numerous years, prior to purchasing in Brooklyn Heights. I commend you for your stance on litter as a whole; however the tone of your statement was offensive.

  2. PS on the topic of racism today, thank god that Obama is taking suit to Arizona for their bass-ackwards bs racist immigration law. Yes this country certainly needs immigration reform, but not the kind tha Gov. Brewer was trying for.

Real immigration reform is going to start with amnesty first. Everytime you hear some redneck shout that “they have to go home first and then pay a bunch of money to come back” what they are really trying to say is “we dont want them here.”

If you dont want illegals here, then make them legal. Make it easier to get into the country legally. Make it harder to get into the country illeagally.

  3. Sam,

It would be great to get your opinion then:

Even though you obviously like to BBQ in the park, would you not prefer that grilling be banned so that the park could be kept cleaner, similar to what you identified in Central Park?

    Thanks,

    Sloper

  4. Hi Chariset. Your up by Cadman Plaza right? So do you even ever spend time in the South Slope? Just curious if you actually know what you are talking about before you throw around “racist” accusations…

  5. Thank you Relampago, your first comment was dead on. I’ve seen people of all ethnicities litter. I’ve seen people of all ethnicities clean up after themselves. The racist tone here is deplorable.

  6. I was actually one of the many BBQers in the Park on July 4th. In the North Meadow. We were a big group, of about 25 people. (Multicultural, if that matters). We left nothing behind. The group next to us, a group of about 12 (also mixed group), left nothing behind. Same with the group on the other side (black family). Nothing left behind. Walking to the exit, we passed little garbage strewn about, except we did pass overflowing trash bins (which cannot be avoided after a summer weekend). The only messy area, was the northernmost area, by the exit, where the big dumpster was located, which is where some very large extended families were BBQing. It would be hard to generalize – but I would venture to guess that the bigger the group and the larger the number of kids in the group, the more mess will be left behind (as kids make mess and generally dont help carry out garbage). May have been that more families may have been in the south part of park. Who knows. It is disgusting and a shame, that people dont have enough regard for others. [I will say that part of the reason PP gets so messy is because they permit BBQing. Go to the north part of Central Park where you have many families picnicing on weekends – as no BBQing is permitted, the mess is dramatically less.

  7. Bowl, Because I dont feel that I should have to leave town or “stay away” from the area that is right outside my front door, just because other people cant be responsible.

And I’ll debate you on the whole bit about who you can control. These idiots need to be controlled. Parks Service need to get on their rear ends…

  8. If you know that groups of littering latinos raise your blood pressure, why don’t you just stay away from that area during festive occasions? Find another place where they act / celebrate….to your liking. Your own actions are really all you can control in life… and life’s too short.

  9. hmmm. not so sure about that explanation Dave.

I know plenty of Kitchen workers and nannies working below minimum wage and who obviously dont have a lot of money to show for it. Interestingly, these people probably value the material and physical environment around themselves more than anyone precisely because they cant afford to buy throw away and consume so freely. So I dont really think its a class problem. Again, I believe it to be cultural.
