It’s truly amazing how the South Slope Latino community is so ready to hijack the SW corner of the park every holiday weekend for their enormous bar-b-ques. Even more fascinating though is the amount of plastic crap they leave thrown about for the rest of us to find the next morning.

  1. Im not a fan of the racial terms involved in the initial post. I dont care what color or creed the pigs are, its a real shame. I live by Tompkins Park in bed stuy. Its the same there every weekend in the summer. It just looks like the people evaporated. I got to know some of the clean up guys there from walking the dogs every morning. After one holiday I was speaking with one guy and he said he wished the city would have people working clean up on the holiday and not just wait for the monstrous clean up the next day. These guys do such a good job. Why arent there more parks dep cops around at dusk as the park is closing. thats when most of the big parties evaporate.

  2. I love how the original poster uses the term “South Slope Latinos” with such derision. You can just feel the nasal patronizing tone coming through his or her words. See, “South Slope Latinos” is a term that riles up two of the strongest yupster condescension points: elitism against anyone who’s not a white hipster-yuppie transplant and elitism against anyone who doesn’t live in ‘North Park Slope’ (many of the yupsters contend that ‘Park Slope proper’ ends at 9th Street, 12th Street or 15th Street depending on where they live).

And I agree with the poster who responded that people like “Sloper77” are the reason why they left the Slope. I will be making my exit from this La-La Land neighborhood in the next few years and letting some yuppie renter pay my mortgage in another Brooklyn neighborhood where normal people still live. The yupster will get the bragging rights to say he lives in “Park Sleh-owwwpe”; I’ll get his money–it’s a win-win situation!

  3. All you savages who claim they not racist….they most racist savages out there…you just trying to hide your ugly face behind your politically correct bull shit….I am racist damn right I am racist…I have realized so called “minoriry crowd” the most racist people ever….benzona

you all can go screw yourself morons

  4. Why would banning BBQing be considered racist? Oh, against meat eaters?? 🙂 Seriously, many other city parks don’t permit BBQing, for the better of the Park. Most of Central Park above 96th street is used mainly by a lower socioeconomic population, and noone screams racism because BBQing is prohibited. Indeed, by arguing that its racist, you admit that the offenders are of a particular race.

  5. and THAT folks is what honesty looks like. Not racism, not hatred, not tone-def, not vitrolic, not any of the knee-jerk BS that you guys threw around today. Just honest observation and a willingness to call it as one sees it.

Nuff said. Take care all. If youre lucky BBQ will still be legal next week.

  6. hahaha – I just think everyone should get off their high-horse and stop being so “PC” for a moment
perhaps sloper is right – perhaps he/she did spend all weekend observing “latinos” bbq-ing in the park and then just leaving their litter behind – is that so wrong to call them out on it? Um ever been to a rowdy ghetto party? it gets messy and those folks are too drunk at the end of it to care about picking up garbage!
sure – it would be better if you maybe approached them at the time of the crime and ask them to pitch their litter in the can, but why be confrontational when you can come on here and get it off your chest about how you really feel about “latinos”

Anywhoo – I give this poster credit for at least not disguising how they really feel
and come on, you mean to tell me that all the people here shaking their finger at this poster calling him/her a racist hasn’t had their OWN observations about other cultures?

I’ve got one that I often ask:
why do all Chinese ladies speak so loudly on the train?
Whew, there I said it! – does it mean I am a racist? or just pointing out every damn time I am on the train a gaggle of Chinese Ladies gets on yelling at each other. SO do young pre-teen white girls and that drives me nuts too – but am white, so I don’t “wonder outloud about it” I own it b/c I probably did it as a teen

    OR here’s a better one:
Why do a lot of black people talk out loud at the movie theatre actually AT THE MOVIE so much -kinda weird, no? but I bet many of you wondered why?

I mean let’s chill out – sometimes it actually makes it better when you can be open about the annoying or comical or outlandish things another culture does
Am Irish – so poke all the fun you want – I could care less – it’s funny and you know what sometimes it is true – we are a buncha drunks who like to fight and we also have contributed a heck of a lot of stuff to the beauty of this world

and Sloper – you gots to chill – I mean not for nothing but pick up a trash bag the day after and just help clean it up if it drives you nuts – but don’t go and start a petition to ban BBQ-ing in the park as it is – there are so many people who enjoy it and actually add to the ambience of the park – it’s not fair to take it away from all the good people

  7. Wouldn’t a ban on BBQ’ing in the park be seen as elitist and racist? And of course it would be.

  8. maybe we need to start petitioning park service for a ban then….

certainly they are fed up with it by now. Obviously it would only help their budget to not have to pay crews to pick up after slobs, empty charcoal pits etc…

    On it.

  9. If banning BBQing in the park means a cleaner park, then I am all for banning BBQing in the park! (Frankly, when riding around the park, the smells from the BBQs get really nauseating).
