slate research continues…

i’m finding some places online that sell 16×16 slate much cheaper than, say, tile center. about 1/2 the price.

that said, i’m uncertain what the quality will be. not that i need the best, but i certainly don’t want to get stuff that looks completely awful.

we’re decided on honed montauk black, if that makes any difference.

also, i know there are different countries where the stone is sourced – are there any particular slab originations i should absolutely avoid? this is for kitchen floor, btw.

anyone here purchase slate tiles online and have had good experience?

  1. I’have bought some tiles from stonetiledepot.com which is owned by a company called Marble Systems, they do sell very poor quality left over tiles, delivery took lot longer and the sample wasn’t correct 2 times. Finally they send the correct one and when i wanted to order they didn’t have any in stock!!! However Marble systems did have it for a higher price.

They are hiding that stonetiledepot.com is owned by marblesystems since they do sell it cheaper online.

Instead i purchased more than 1200 square feet tile from metropolitantiledepot.com , much better customer service and all the natural stone was perfect quality. I highly recommended to everybody.

They also worked out a deal on shipment as well.

  2. i’d like to think of my taste as “specific’, rather than “picky” 🙂

i do agree with ordering samples first before making final purchase.
i’m trying to do as much research as possible with regard to slate uniformity. what i’m unsure if at this point is if the uniformity is more about the natural state of slate or if it’s more a control/quality factor of the fabricator. thus my reason for inquiring about online sources – if anyone has had a good experience with one, having gone thru the same issues as i am.

  3. I’ve bought tile & flooring three times on-line, but I’m not picky at all…you seem (from your previous post on “uniformity in tile”,) very picky. Don’t think on-line and pickiness is a good combo, particularly for tile…would you return unsuitable lots of tile?

That said, I don’t see the problem. All tile stores ship samples(sometimes free). I doubt anyone has multiple experiences with a store, so recommendations would be iffy. Store search engines have both reviews and show reliability levels, so start from there.

Also, I found that shipping charges pretty much eliminate the price advantage; twice I bought on-line because it was discounted sale material with free shipping, close enough to what I was looking for.

Finally, a personal opinion…tile in kitchens is awful. Something more forgiving is better…cork, linoleum, even wood.

  4. Buy the sample and check it out. I get an emails all the time from a company called stone locator (i think). Their prices are pretty good.
