Friends who are considering moving back to New York were asking me about places to live in Brooklyn. They have three large dogs (all over 50 pounds) and, as such, need to have outdoor space. They would also like to find a place with decent access to subways. They are looking to spend anywhere from $500k to $900k and would like at least two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Can anyone suggest a nice (preferably brownstone filled) neighbourhood where they can get at least a garden level apartment with access to the backyard that is also relatively close to subways?
If they decide they want a full home, what are other nice neighbourhoods where they would have subway access and be able to purchase something without spending what they would in Brooklyn Heights or Park Slope?
Thanks!
As an owner of a large dog, I don’t understand the idea behind a semi-attached or detatched house. My dog makes a lot less noise than I do in my house… He’s mostly sleeping.
For owners of big dogs a semi-attached house is great because there’s just one shared wall not two. Freestanding is ideal sure, but there ain’t none of those for under a million in Ditmas Park on a good block well located to the train. Unless it’s in terrible shape. The 1920’s built semi-attached have more spacious modern layouts and don’t have narrow galley kitchens so that’s better for big dogs too; a lot of those houses are found in PLG and in Kensington which is a great place to look, don’t know if anyone mentioned Kensington yet. Cute houses, affordable.
Prospect Lefferts Gardens is a beautiful neighborhood, has houses in your friends price range, is well-served by ssbways, and is about 20 minutes from lower midtown via the Q or B train.
5w30, NO WAY! I grew up, and I use the term loosely, in Toronto and used to live at Bayview and Eglinton – Leaside – before I moved to New York. Small world (but I’d hate to paint it).
Well, if you’re looking for a “neighbourhood” I would suggest something north and a bit east of Yonge and Eglinton.
We got NEIGHBORHOODS here, brother!
Hands down its got to be Ditmas Park. Great Subways D or B express trains, good restaurants, privacy and land, close to the park, parking or driveways, front porches, trees and flowers and quiet. I lived in Ft Greene for 25 years….just like manhattan now if you want that. Being further out for me is just chill. Census said most diverse nab in Bklyn. My sister lives on south side of Crown Heights…near to park and botanical gardens, no restaurants but a gated alley with a 2 car garage…can’t beat that and 550K and up to 700K.
With three dogs that size, they should really get a house instead of an apartment. For the sake of the dogs themselves, as well as neighbor relations.
That South Slope house that 11217 linked to looks supersweet.
You could get one of the smaller to medium Ditmas Park houses for around that amount. Smaller by DP standards, but larger than the South Slope place. And it will be more likely to be free-standing instead of a rowhouse.
In South Slope, you will be closer to more nice restaurants and shops, but we are getting more of that in DP as time goes by.
It all depends on what they want in a neighborhood. Seems like they have a lot of choices.
Look, I love Bed Stuy. I’m just telling it like it is. On the south west end of the neighborhood, that’s the reaction I get. I’m not saying they should not move here, I just don’t find it to be the most dog friendly neighborhood in the world.
Disclosure: I have an extremely friendly pitbull and a large mutt who drag me down the street.
Mopar,
The house I linked is in South Slope.
Whole house, under 900K. 2 bedrooms, 2 bath and a garden.
Terrific layout.
