Friends who are considering moving back to New York were asking me about places to live in Brooklyn. They have three large dogs (all over 50 pounds) and, as such, need to have outdoor space. They would also like to find a place with decent access to subways. They are looking to spend anywhere from $500k to $900k and would like at least two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Can anyone suggest a nice (preferably brownstone filled) neighbourhood where they can get at least a garden level apartment with access to the backyard that is also relatively close to subways?
If they decide they want a full home, what are other nice neighbourhoods where they would have subway access and be able to purchase something without spending what they would in Brooklyn Heights or Park Slope?
Thanks!
boxers actually biff dont like the city in general, whenever i pass one i see pain in their eyes 🙁 their owners are oblvious or they just dont care

I thought Rob was talking about boxers.
“ive noticed that pugs are problematic in park slope.”
Yes, kids can be a problem.
i think your neighborhood should be determined by what kinds of dogs you have. i cant believe everyone gave you a million suggestions without even knowing what kind of dogs you have :-/
certain dogs will be shunned in certain neighborhoods, just like people. some dogs are also not comfortable in some neighborhoods, just like people. ive noticed that pugs are problematic in park slope.

rh, why do you think Bed Stuy is not dog friendly??? I feel that it’s more dog friendly than many other places.
No, there are no defined dog runs or anything of the sort but people’s dogs run free in that section of Fulton park near Chauncey St and a lot of dogs seem to socialize well there.
Most dog owners know each other in bed Stuy.
Just as an aside, Bay Ridge is home to the Narrows Botanical Garden, which is the only botanical garden in NYC to allow dogs onto its grounds. Its located on the water so its can be quite lovely to walk around or enjoy a picnic on the lawn.
“I also get daily updates from StreetEasy based on certain search criteria and I don’t pay for it”
Please STOP looking to move back into Manhattan. It will make walking over the Bridge less fun for jessi and me. Plus which I enjoy playing chicken with you when you’re on your bike.
I’m an ex-Sloper, current Stuyer (well, actually part time upstate for the moment). If it wasn’t for the dogs, I’d say my lovely neighborhood of Bed Stuy is the best!
They can certainly get a full house with a back yard/ close to trains within their price range.
If their lives revolve around their dogs like me, they might want to try for a more dog friendly neighborhood. Got a car? No problem, I still take my dogs over to Prospect Park from BS and it takes me less than 10 minutes to get there.
If no car, there are only smaller dog runs around Bed Stuy and people on the sidewalk tend to be frightened of large dogs.
Soooo, some other suggestions would be places with bigger parks with off leash hours:
1. Surrounding areas of Ft Greene or Prospect Park
2. Bay Ridge
3. Don’t forget Coney Island and the beach. I don’t think there are off leash hours, but it’s easy enough to get away with it off season.
We just moved into a house on Rugby Road in the West Midwood section of Victorian Flatbush. We have a 100 pound dog ourselves and we have found the neighborhood to be perfect for our needs. I work in SoHo and my commute on the B train is less than 30 minutes of on-train time. We purchased our home for less than 800k. In other words, I agree with the suggestion for the general Ditmas Park area being good suggestions. Especially if they are into the style of the houses there.
