I thought I read somewhere that when you finish a basement with interior walls, you do NOT insulate behind the walls (the new walls would be abt a foot from the foundation walls).

Is this correct? Wouldn’t you need to insulate the back wall at least?

  1. Yes, creating an air cavity between the substrate and the drywall will have an insulative effect. However, the 20007 NYSECCC specifies a basement wall r value of 13. Insulate. Its cheap and it works.

  2. Yes, the more insulation the better. That said, you don’t want to use fiberglass batts up against the stone foundation as there will be moisture that will eventually ruin the batts. Use rigid or spray foam and definitley use a moisture barrier for anything other than spray foam.

  3. If it is going to be a heated space, insulate.
