I move to this brownstone 2 years ago and I have been collecting a lot of dust from the cement coming of the wall in my basement the space bt the rock is getting wide and deeper, only from the wall facing the backyard and the wall facing the street.
Should I use a regular cement for pointing??
Any advise.
thanks

  1. We had dust and chunks coming off an exposed brick wall in our old coop, and I coated it myself with a clear air permeable substance the guy at the hardware store recommended. It was easy and it totally did the job and held in the mortar dust after that. It also made the wall look better. If you do it in a basement just make sure you’ve ventilated it well while doing the work. The stuff smells strongly!

  2. I would think twice about resurfacing/covering below grade masonry. Our brick foundation was “sealed” on the inside with some type of cementitious coating. That coating is dropping off in chunks, in both the front and the rear of the building, revealing deteriorated brick underneath. I think ground water seeps into the foundation, and has no outlet. And without being allowed to escape and evaporate, water gets trapped in the brick. My side walls are also sealed, but they are still in good shape (fully attached house). This indicates to me that the front and rear are suffering from exposure to the elements from the outside. In my case, I think I need to address the problem of water penetrating the exterior of my walls. Not an expert, but that is my observation in my home.

  3. Is this wall below grade wall I think you should use typs s cement. Befofe you do the work make sure you ask a pro. But I had the same thing done to my house and it has helped. No more water or moisture in the basement.

  4. I wouldn’t point around the rocks but resurface the walls with a bonding cement. Type “N” . Build up a surface a half of an inch at a time until you have a sealed wall, covering the rocks. This will help your basement stay dry too.
