In case someone is looking for a good mason, we demoed the shed in our backyard and hired Manny LaSalle (917-292-1825) to fill the hole of about 12X10 feet. They also poured concrete, pitching to our outdoor drain, where removal of the shed left us with dirt and gravel. Good work, he kept to his price, and he was quick.

  1. trn, I have a DoB inspection in about 2 weeks, so I guess I’ll find out — (and ouch! if they make me tear it down) — but I am hoping we are okay. The plans drawn with the wood deck were approved by the city. The specifications on the plans were only about railing height, space between balustrades, depth of footings, and thickness of supporting pillars.

  2. I was under the impression that the underlying structure had to be iron (non-flam), the actual decking (wood vs non-flam/3′ rule seems to vary on what day of the week it is.

This is a new wood deck and it is permitted? Wow!

  3. We got a permit because we are doing a C of O job on the house, so we included the deck on the plans when we filed.

Otherwise I don’t know whether a permit is strictly necessary; you probably should check though before getting started. I do know that you are supposed to dig down 4 feet for the footings, and that a wood deck cannot be within 3 feet of your neighbor’s property (for fire safety).

  4. We are looking to do similar…just wondering if you needed a permit for that fancy new deck??
