I am considering doing irregular bluestone pathways in the 3-foot alleyway between my house and neighbor’s, and in an area 8 feet wide, again between the 2 houses. These areas are currently covered in (cracking)concrete. Given the proximity to both foundations, some contractors have advised that setting in sand and gravel will eventually lead to basement water problems (next door neighbor already has had some issues), and so have advised that stone be set on concrete slab and mortared. Other contractors have said that setting in sand will not pose a problem. Soliciting additional opinions……. Thanks!

  1. No question permeability is better unless you install a drain in the concrete (with its attendant problems). Better for everyone else too. Install extra depth of sand for drainage if you’re worried.

  2. I’d think you’d have more problems rather than fewer w/ concrete slab. To be super safe, you could dig down below the foundation line for a small section & put in rocks – sort of as a french drain.
