Did a soapstone kitchen counter search on this site, and it seems like the only place people have used and recommended is Texeira in NJ. Does anyone have any leads for Brooklyn–looking for material and installation.

  1. I used an installer from CT I found through Vermont Soapstone. While I like the counters it was one of those decisions which did not go well. My reno was a dyi with assistance from local “characters” (including Tony who was featured once installing a windown on the pages of Brownstoner). We supplied the measurements, and the installers came with pre-cut stone to install. However it turned into a disaster and cost about 1000 more than expected because the site wasn’t ready and the installer never refunded money he promised. That said, perhaps you can find a national supplier who can supply the stone to be installed by someone else. Just don’t use anyone from CT. Ever. Or maybe don’t use Tony…

  2. When I was searching for soapstone 2 years ago, I didn’t have much luck finding yards in Brooklyn with the product. However, European Granite and Marble (on 19th Street) which has a great selection of stones in general btw, was carrying one type of soapstone at the time — Malibu Green. Unfortunately, European is only a wholesale dealer. That is, you must have your own fabricator in order to do business with them.

In the end, I passed on the overhyped M.Teixiera and went with a smaller, family-owned business also in New Jersey — http://www.gardenstatesoapstone.com . Business owners Jay and Donna Tauber are soapstone specialists, have a very good selection, price their product reasonably, do great fabrication, templating and installation and treat their customers very well.
