does anyone know how hard it is to DIY install blown-in insulation in a brownstone crawlspace? I have about 24 inches of empty space between my upstairs ceiling and my roof, and I’d like to fill it with insulation. I can access the space non-invasively from the roof hatch. Anyone with experience doing this themselves? Or is it better to use a contractor? Thanks!

  1. I did it with my son last summer. Prep and planning are important. You have to figure how you’ll get within roughly 15 feet of where you want to spray the fill. Several points of entry may be necessary. Fortunately, I had the scuttleway, a shaftway, a removable skylight and three wind turbine holes on the roof. You can extend your reach with an extending pole used to wash windows. Attach the nozzle to the tip of the pole with duct tape. Sealing up and cleaning up is important and you must leave lots of time for them. Don’t forget a good utility light–it’s dark up there.

  2. You could do it but… Unless you have lots of time to invest in learning, then in doing – i’d suggest using a contractor. Having worked as a contractor i recognized that you won’t save much, esp. when you factor in your time. So i did a bunch of local research when doing my Prosp. Leff.Gardens brownstone’s similar roof space. I chose a subcontractor who worked with the material i wanted to use – “Thinsulate IV”.

The result from blown in is superior to batts.
