hi, im looking at buying the upper duplex of an old house in ditmas park and am trying to figure out how much restoring the woodwork would cost. its basically all been painted over. so it would involve stripping and refinishing bannisters on two floors, plus the doors and door frames for four bedrooms, dining room, living room, kitchen and five closets. the floors look to be in good shape, but would need to be sanded and refinished too. the total square footage is about 1900 square feet. i realize this isnt enogh info to get a precise cost, but whats the ballpark range and timing required for this sort of job? 20K? 50k? 2 weeks? four weeks? any advice would be much appreciated.
thanks a lot.

  1. You’ll need to know first whether the
wood was finished prior to painting.
If there is a layer of shellac or lacquer
under that paint, you should be able
to strip, but you won’t be able to get
an idea of how it’ll look – and whether
it’ll be worth it – unless you do a test
area first. If the wood was never
finished, stripping is harder and less
    likely to uncover something beautiful.
