My husband and I are going into contract on a beautiful brownstone in Bed-Stuy and we just got the dissapointing (but somewhat expected) report that the place has both lead paint and asbestos. I am looking for any advice, comments, and price estimates on dealing with this. Money is an issue, but it is very important to us that we deal with this in a safe way as I am pregnant.

  1. Hello, I know your concern, We had a similar problem with lead when we brought my home we had lead piping through the entire house and on basically all the frames on the house. It was a duanting time for us. Me and my husband got several estimates until we came upon a young man that owns his own abatement company, I was very pleased with his work and the price was more then better. I believe his prices are very reasonable, What I liked the most was he understood I needed the Job done ASAP and did not take long the way my other contractors had done. his name is Woody and he is located in Park Slope and can be reached at 347-203-6128 good luck with the home and congrats on the new baby.

  2. Does anyone know the risk of NOT filing an asbestos abatement project?

  3. thanks lc! I actually found both. The discussion on lead was on the main page a few months back.

To the previous poster…thanks for the info on your lead abatement experience. If you were happy with the people you used, I was wondering if you could pass on the name and #.

  4. i found the posts on asbestors- go to “catagories” on the left sidebar, and it’s under “environmental”. I couldn’t find the discussions on lead either.

I remember one of the posters gave the EPA website:

    http://www.epa.gov/lead/

    which was helpful.

  5. Hi lc,
I remember the lead discussion from before but I couldn’t find it in the forum archives. Does anyone happen to remember where it is?

  6. When we got an estimate for lead paint removal it was for about $700/room. There are 2 ways to deal with it. They can seal it in with a certain kind of paint or remove it completely which means either scraping it off woodwork or replastering walls. We chose to remove it from doorways and baseboards. Doorways are important because of the friction that occurs there. You can’t be in the house while it’s being abated either so make sure you get it dealt with right away. Its’ possible to do some now (parlor floor/baby’s room) and some later but it’s best to do it all at once since it involves sealing off parts of your home.

  7. check out the forum archives- there have been a few discussions on lead and asbestos.
