Big news on the Broken Angel front: Yesterday, the Woods agreed in Supreme Court to dismantle the 40-foot sculpture that sits atop the former trolley headquarters; they also have a tentative agreement with local developer (and former reno blogger) Shahn Anderson) to turn the building into condominiums, according to Tish James. This is not the outcome the Woods wanted but sure beats ending up with nothing. I have to do something, Mr. Wood said. Everything I own is there: paintings, thousands of dollars worth of equipment. Maybe we can do a Broken Angel reno blog? (As an aside, the mainstream media once again fails to give proper attribution to blogs in this article. We just don’t get the reluctance. Robin?)

  1. I think it’s admirable that someone wants to help save this building. If it’s so easy to do Anon 6:29, why the hell aren’t you the one bringing your development experience to the table and making something of the place?

  2. Admiration???? He’s taking property that’s not his and developing condos and takingn half the profits??? Please anybody that new an ounce about development would do the same thing. Where’s the risk? What has this guy actually “developed besides a townhouse??

  3. SHAHN YOU WIN ALL MY ADMIRATION FOR DOING THIS!! i am so happy that you are helping keep things proper with Broken Angel! i sincerely hope this truly happens and volunteer support in any way possible. Broken Angel is a truly unique wonder that should never be destroyed, a true asset to Brooklyn.

  4. Rider, have you seen the drawings Arthur made for his vision of what he eventually wanted to make Broken Angel look like? Those drawings are currently on display in the drawing room at Pratt. That’s what is going to be built back on top (out of fireproof materials) when the portion of the building that the DOB has deemed illegal has been removed.

The new Broken Angel will be even more imaginative and esoteric than the current one.

  5. As a longtime reporter myself, I share B-stoner’s annoyance at media that uses other media (blogs or whatever they may be) as tip services and fails to attribute–particularly ridiculous when you are the NYTimes. I can only figure that it’s defensiveness, a stubborn refusal to acknowledge that blogs like this one have handily supplanted the role that newspapers have failed to play well enough, especially on a neighborhood level.

  6. We can’t speak for Shahn, but we believe he has known the Woods for some time and, given what’s happened to them, they presumably would prefer to be involved with a known quantity that they can trust.

  7. Pie in the sky dreams of everyone singing kum-bah-yah together aside, construction and consulting require tons of money to do right because labor and materials and overhead are expensive. Those consultants who would do the same service without any sharing? Where are they? Come to my home, puhleez.

The Woods didn’t maintain their property appropriately (and I like the building and what they did so that isn’t a slam but a sad fact) and now they are paying the consequences with a much smaller penalty then it could have been — like losing their home entirely and then having Shahn buy it and develop it.

I like living in a fantasy world (I get paid for it as an interior designer), but I have learned the hard way that you get what you pay for and that you need to deal with the consequences of your behavior whether in relationships or in terms of maintaining a house.
