We blogged about 461 Carroll Street when it was mid-construction last year. At the time the building had yet to show its cards in terms of aesthetics. Well, all has been revealed. The result: A very modern but rather attractive two-family residence. Do you like it?

  1. I’d like to see it in person and without the shed (so I can see the base of the building), but overall this looks just fine. It is a new building – this is what new buildings look like. It’s even the same size (and the same color!) as the building it replaced. (The photo, btw, distorts the building, making it look much wider and shorter than it really is – it also looks more blue than white in the photo.)

It doesn’t really matter what the block looks like – this is what it is. A simple, contemporary design that makes a perfectly nice infill in an urban streetscape. It’s not going to win any architecture prizes, but not every building should.

  2. It’s Gowanus… it looks pretty good to me.
It’s not like it’s stuck between a row of brownstones.
Most of Gowanus is unattractive anyway; like, the best compliment I could give is “Gowanus… she’s a handsome woman”.

Have any of you haters actually been on that block?

This is probably the nicest looking building there, and is at the very least a far cry better than the sorry shack that used to be there.”

This is the second time that Snarkie and I have agreed today.

Parents: Be afraid. Be very afraid. 😉

  4. The block isn’t that great, but not terrible either.
The building before, yes, I will have to admit was horrible, so maybe I might change my mind just a wee bit.
Maybe if it was in the brownish tones instead of white, it would look a little better.
