There were more protesters and members of the media than construction workers on site this morning at Ward’s Bakery. The Hagan sisters were there with their signs and Norman Oder with his camera. Meanwhile, the only instrument of destruction onsite was this Keyspan backhoe.

  1. I’m sorry but you’re a tool. What does building the arena in Coney Island has to do with race? And how can you remind us that we live in a capitalist society and Ratner is doing his part and call the other developer sleazy.
I don’t get it one bit I actually wasted my time to read that comment.

  2. To anon 4:52 am —
Thank you, thank you. You have written the most insightful comment about AY I have read on this site in months, possibly years. I too was on the fence about this project at first, but the virulence of its opponents, and their complete and utter refusal to countenance opinions other than their own, made me see the value of the project, despite its flaws. I am particularly turned off by their argument that the project would work better in Coney Island — yet they insist this isn’t about race. And then there’s the traffic argument. Why is anyone driving around that part of Brooklyn in the first place, given that it is better served by public transportation than just about any other area of the city? And then there’s the personification of Ratner as the devil. Hey, I’m as liberal as the next brownstoner, but we live in a capitalist society, and Ratner is just trying to make as much money as he can under that system. Besides, at least he stepped up–no other developer was interested in developing the site (and don’t hand me Extel, a sleazy developer if there ever was one).

And for all you anti-AY folks who use the Atlantic mall as a cudgel–hey, I like that mall, I shop there all the time, and I’ve never been there when it wasn’t packed (though usually with people from a different demographic than DDDB, perhaps that’s the problem?). Yes, give me Chuck E. Cheese and Target over a rundown warehouse any day. And give me AY, with some innovative Gehry buildings, over the blight we have now. And I could care less about the Nets.

  3. Eryximachus’ post is a perfect example of how Ratner has duped people into supporting him. somehow his massive PR machine has tricked them into thinking he’s on their side, that he actually supports the low-income folks and people who can’t afford to buy in Brooklyn. and he’s done this to the point where someone like Eryximachus gets on a message board and endlessly shouts down the kind of person that is actually … Ratner himself! the irony of it can only make me laugh at this point. what a swindle!!!

  4. tuesday@11:28, you cannot just add more trains when the cars get crowded. trains can only be as long as the platforms and can only run as close together as the signals allow. the mta was able to increase service on the L train because the new computerized system shortened the ‘headway,’ the space between trains. next solution….

  5. ignore eryximachus please. this self proclaimed 20 something with a 6 figure salary says over and over how he can’t afford anything in manhattan (his words, not mine) and is so bitter about it that he has nothing better to do than come on here and bitch to other people who have made their dream of owning property a reality.

hey erychimachis…perhaps you could spend the time you do writing toll-like posts on brownstoner, get a job at key food in the evenings, make some extra bucks and try again in a few years for that pie in the sky.

personally as a 30’s guy who makes quite a bit less than 100K a year and just bought my first place this past year in park slope, i have no sympathy at all.
