Just the other day we caught the HoodRich building at 812 Pacific Street going down. And now its neighbor at 540 Vanderbilt Avenue, one of two in the area with vintage Hot Bird signage, will soon suffer a similar fate. It looks like it has been chipped away from the top and gutted from the inside. Like we already mentioned, this will someday be arena parking.

  1. I’m not a big fan of the parking lots, but where does the 6 square block number come from?
    The entire project is not that large.

    The large parking area will be on the single block between Dean, Carlton, Pacific (or where Pacific used to be) and Vanderbilt.

  2. The arena is one thing, but the parking lots really are a travesty. It’s going to be six square blocks — of surface parking lots? This isn’t Atlanta, fer chrissake’s. I really wish Ratner at least built the lots over the tracks instead of demolishing buildings for them… since, you know, the railyard is the whole reason the neighborhood is so “blighted” in the first place.

  3. Now that FCR has ownership of all the properties, I would think they’re over the hump in terms of legal challenges, since the lawsuits all pertained to the eminent domain claim, but I suppose there could always be something. I can see how they’d want to get everything demolished now rather than have to deal with another round of evictions later. It’s just unfortunate that no one will be making good use of all this land- which previously held homes and business – for some years to come.

  4. My understanding is that this land will also be used for construction staging when it is time to build the deck over the rail yards, but even that is quite a few years out.

    From a purely business perspective, why would FCR leave the buildings up for one more day when where is a chance that some new lawsuit, administration change, or other event will can come along at any time to delay the overall process?
