Another Glassy Addition on Sackett Street

An extra story is going up at the brick rowhouse at 463 Sackett Street. It just got glassed up and the architect on the project tells us it will be finished in around six weeks. While it’s kind of hard to see with all the netting still on, it looks very similar to another glass addition nearby at 450 Sackett. (The picture’s after the jump.) The glass facade will consist of five diagonal panes while the one at #450 has twelve smaller ones. We’re not wild about how either of them looks. You? GMAP
450 Sackett Street
Okay, I’m an old preservationist, but I’ll admit, I really can get into some of the mod additions to old buildings (mentioned above). I especially love some of the things we’ve seen in Europe. Brooklyn, less. In fact, I’ll have to admit we kind of a backwater.
Anyway, I would have preferred to see some sort of “mansarded”/”dormered” top story…and it could have been very bright inside with well-placed skylights…and considering this is non-landmarked, they could have gone with something excitingly mod instead. But that might have been very costly.
Still, I can’t say I love the house with the 12-lite sloping ugliness. Owners, please don’t take offense. I’m sure the house will sell easily when/if you sell it.
Meanwhile, why is there so much hideous fake fieldstone ruining our streetscape?
Adam, I really agree with you. Adding a roof with nice slates and two nice big dormer windows can give you as much space, as much light in a nicer way, and can look so beautiful. Really enhancing rather than detracting from the old house and its beautiful cornice.
I would think adding dormers with fish-scale shingles would make a nice floor addition. How much would one cost? I love those 5 story brownstones with the 5th dormer floor.
Personally, I don’t like 450, but the new one at 463 is fine. As someone pointed out, from what we can see, the rest of the block isn’t exactly a landmark.
Agree w mianrd, plus these should be banned!
whenever someone tries to do a “contextual” tumor it always ends up looking atrocious. i like the contrast btw the old/new.
and these extensions typically aren’t THAT visible from streetlevel.
With neighbors like that I urge the owners not to be contextual at all! FWIW I like the 463 better than 450, which looks like a coffered ceiling turned inside out.
how much do these additions probably cost? anyone guess?
The first one I don’t like so much, but the second one is fine enough for the block. It’s not like the street is a museum: look at all those weird facade jobs. It can be done better; there’s a great artist’s studio-like addition on Elizabeth street, modern in execution but with perfect balance with the building and its neighbors. Now for their sake, I hope those panes face north.
