Giant Hotel Going in Next to Williamsburgh Savings Bank

A 40-story building is planned in the empty lot at 159 Broadway next to the historic Williamsburgh Savings Bank building and across from Peter Luger in South Williamsburg. The building will be a 250-room boutique hotel, The Real Deal reported. Owner and developer Juan Figueroa owns both properties and has been restoring the bank building to the tune of an estimated $3 million, the paper said. The bank should open later this year as an event space, while the hotel is slated to debut in early 2015. Figueroa doesn’t yet have financing in place for the build, the paper noted. Wow. Forty stories will really change the feel of this stretch of Broadway, which is mostly 19th-century commercial buildings.
