Who could’ve predicted this? Some folks—Marty Markowitz, for one—say notoriously downtrodden and crime-ridden East New York is undergoing a renaissance and could become “the new Harlem.” There’s been a lot of demand for home ownership options in the area, most notably at the massive condo conversion MeadowWood at Gateway, where prices range from $110,500 to $350,000. “There is no question that the neighborhoods with higher rates of home ownership have the greatest stability, schools and community services,” says Markowitz of how ENY is changing. “Brooklynites outside of the ‘Brownstone Belt’ don’t realize that we have an affordability issue in certain neighborhoods and we’re losing families to other areas such as New Jersey. We’re committed to not letting that happen.” Other developments are also boosting the sprawling neighborhood’s profile, including the Related Companies Gateway Center shopping mall, which has a Target, Home Depot, Best Buy, and a supermarket and is going to be expanded in coming years with more big-box retail. Another large ENY home-ownership project, Nehemiah Housing Complex, is also currently being built. The complex will bring more than 2,000 middle-income units to the neighborhoods, with prices starting at $158,000. “Every place has its time,” says Fillmore Real Estate’s John-Paul Ho, who heads the team selling MeadowWood. “Now it’s East New York. It’s like a Cinderella story for the entire area.”

  1. i love the idiots that think east new york is going to do anything now with the economy tanking.

even bed stuy, crown heights and clinton hill are going to suffer some and these are barely fringe neighborhoods.

east new york will gentrify allright.

    in about 2040.

  2. tWhat, your neighborhood, Clinton Hill, has gentrified and you can’t handle that the new residents are actually well-behaved and civil. They look at you as if you are a piece of ghetto trash. You know why? Because you are. Your old neighbors (who were also well-behaved and civil) thought you were trash too, but they kept their mouths shut and then just sold their houses for big profits. Now they don’t have to deal with you.

Where does that leave you? In your rent-controlled apartment dreaming of the day when real estate will crumble and the nasty days of your childhood will return. They won’t. Get used to it or get out.

As for any conspiracy, go ask your old neighbors – who were black – why they joined in the plot to “destroy” your world. They will just laugh at you for being such an idiot.

The war is over. You lost. get out.

  3. Gosh such hostility, what is wrong with ENY becoming the next Harlem? Why can’t another town in BK thrive and change for the better?

LOL, Most of you do not know what YOUR areas looked like through out the 70’s 80’s & 90’s -many of the brownstones we struggle to pay were once loved by postitutes, drug dealers and abusers. Streets were filled with crack tubes and tops of assorted colors, dealers on the corner at 5:00 a.m., ENY is no different and only true BK lovers understand and hope for all towns in BK to improve and make it safe for the next generation.

  4. I have a house in ENY-Cypress hills the stock is great-from 1920’s to 2008-highland park is there and also hipsters are now moving to jamaica ave and arlington avenue. ENY is well on its way-loft heaven can be created on atlantic street streching from alabama street to bradford-wait and see who will have the last laugh. also highland park will be renovated in the next 2 years.
