As expected, the Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC) Board of Directors certified the Atlantic Yards Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) at their meeting yesterday. While the ESDC pointed to cutbacks in the number of apartments and the addition of a school to the plan as evidence of some original thought, critics called the move “a rubber stamp.” So, what now? The Board must wait at least ten days Final EIS as well as the associated General Project Plan and the Eminent Domain Procedure Law findings. The last requirement after that is a unanimous vote from the state Public Authorities Control Board (PACB), which is controlled by the Governor, the Assembly Speaker, and Senate Majority Leader. The big question here is whether Pataki will get a chance to sign off on the deal before he leaves office or whether Eliot Spitzer may get to be involved. For a dissection of yesterday’s certification, check out Norman Oder’s Atlantic Yards Report.

WE DO NOT CARE ABOUT HIGH RISES, TRAFFIC JAMS, LACK OF JOBS OR LACK OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING!!! WE WANT TO COMPLETELY GENTRIFY ALL OF BROWNSTONE BROOKLYN SO THAT WE CAN LIVE IN A COMMUNITY WITH MORE MIDDLE TO HIGH INCOME FAMILIES, A COMMUNITY THAT IS MORE DIVERSED (I.E., MORE BLACKS, WHITES, ASIANS, LATINOS, GAYS, ETC.) AND IN A COMMUNITY WITH BETTER SCHOOLS, MORE AMENITIES AND LOWER CRIME RATES! AY WILL BRING US CLOSER TO THIS GOAL SO WE SUPPORT IT!
WHAT PART OF THE ENGLISH LANUAGE DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?!?!?
The opponents of the Ratner horror do have support from a wide spectrum of Brooklyn’s population. To suggest otherwise is just additionaly lying and bogus divisions perpetuated by those paid off by Ratner. Wake up. This isn’t communist China and Ratner aint Mao — we are going to defeat you. You have to resort to lying in order to make any kind of argument in favor of the proposal. I think you are running out of lies. We have shot them all down.
Wow — what rot. I live in PLG and am totally against this project, as are many of my neighbors.
But what is needed (as was obvious by the questions asked by residents of neighborhoods other than FG, PS, and Prospect Heights at last night’s community forum) is a real counterattack in those areas mentioned above — because so far all people who live there have heard is how it will be good for their neighborhoods, because it will bring in jobs and affordable housing, etc.
Well, these people need to be told the truth — that there will be very few jobs and even fewer affordable apartments in this complex — including NO apartments at all for anyone with income below $21.2K/yr.
AY would be a total disaster for these neighborhoods, just as it would for surrounding areas.
I know DDDB et al have nothing like the money Ratner and co, have been pouring onto their lying direct (and indirect — as in creating paid organizations like BUILD and trumped up politicians like Tracy Boyland) marketing efforts, but more outreach need to be made to reach these people, who are the ones really being manipulated by Ratner and Co — just as they were in the past.
Most of us don’t give a fart about your little battle with Ratner. We just want the nabes east of Flatbush Avenue to improve and we want it to happen ASAP. If it takes AY to get these neighborhoods more fully integrated with better school, lower crime and a more diverse demographic then so be it.
Many of the posters on this blogsite live in Brownstone Brooklyn East and we are constantly reminded by those west of Flatbush Avenue that we live in “fringe” nabes with inferior school systems and dangerous streets. Well it appears that the chicken has come home to roost. We see through your vile manipulation. We see how you side with us when it’s convenient and it serves your self-interest. But we also see that you are quick to turn against us as well. We’ve been the subject of your stereotypes and constant put downs on this very same blogsite. You’ve made it abundantly clear on this board that we live in inferior neighborhoods.
So now, a growing number of people are siding with the AY project because it’s become increasingly clear that AY will shorten the gentrification process by decades and bring about the positive changes that we so desperately need in our neighborhoods. For Christ’s sake, we are fighting for our families too! We own beautiful homes in these nabes and we are not moving! We want better schooling for our children, safer streets to live on and improved good and services to choose from. You Brownstone Brooklyn West haters have shot yourselves in the foot and have given us ample reason to support this project and turn against you!
Remember the constant jabs thrown at nabes like PH, FG, CH, BS, CHN and PLG? Yes those predominant middle class minority communities that you made hard working residents feel like crap because our schools were too black, our neighborhoods were too black and we lacked the many amenities that you take for granted. Ohhhh how the tables have turned. Now you need our support to stop Ratner and AY. Ha! The residents of Brownstone Brooklyn East have been beaten down so much by you haters on this board that you’ve pushed many of us directly into Ratner’s arms. Yes, according to your standards, we do live in inferior neighborhoods. But guess what? We love our homes, love our hoods and will do whatever it takes to protect and raise our families in the best possible environment. If that means having AY built as planned then so be it. Wasn’t it you, the Brooklyn westsider, who told us that without a massive booster shot of gentrification we will forever remain second tier neighborhoods. Hhhhmmmm…Perhaps after AY that will all change…..

these things are what is being advocated by the “smart” folks here who “know what’s best” for Brooklyn. THEY ARE ADVOCATING THE DESTRUCTION OF A DEMOCRATIC PROCESS. that’s right, they are advocating the destruction of an American way by destroying the principles our country was founded on. anyone who is making pro AY comments on here is implicated. you say you know what’s best for a community, great but first you’re going to have to find a different community because as long as i’m part of this community you clearly have no idea what’s best for it. go find a fascist dictator to support, you and your economic theories will be far more welcome there.
Ratner’s goons are obvious and paid off. Just look at the mockery of democracy he has created by paying off so many supporters to come out and ruin the 1st public forum. Just look at the mockery he has created by allowing BUILD and ACORN to use race to mask the detrimental effects of this massively oversized and incorrectly located proposed project. I sat on a train heading towards Albany with the head of the NYS Dept. of Real Property, one of Pataki’s best friends. This was years ago. He was a nice guy. He patiently explained to me how all the nice guys in suits have pre-arranged for there to be some give back in building height, but that’s it. And I told him that the opponents would carry the day. Let me repeat myself. They will. All you goons in suits better pack up and find some other sucker to pay you off. Because we will prevail. It’s our community and whether we are black or white or hispanic or whatever, we are not paid supporters. And we will not go away. And we expect neither will you. Because there is a certain percentage of any population that will do anything for money. Lying, stealing property, the works. But this is America folks and we arent’ going to just roll over and play dead. So you boys in your suits can just look forward to losing. And same goes for FCR shareholders. We are gonna take all your money out of your bank accounts fighing this project. All of it!

3:12 here-blushing furiously right now. Oh well, I’ve been told for years I’m too naive – or dumb as the case may be- and although I did wonder (the word leafy kinda stuck out), some of these posts on B’stoner are so outrageous that I’ve given up trying to figure out who is and isn’t serious. But – I am looking for a nice bridge. 🙂
DDDB has alienated me and I now support the project. AY opponents are evil, malicious and cunning. I will never trust them with Brooklyn’s future.
