A reader sent us the top photo of an old free-standing wood house in Cypress Hills scheduled for a dance with the wrecking ball courtesy of a developer who’s planning on slapping up seven two-family Fedders specials on that one lot. Quel bummer! The single-family house, located on a 95-by-112-foot lot (shown in the smaller pics courtesy of PropertyShark) at 148 Arlington Avenue, sold recently to a developer for $990,000. Any guesses as to what the current owner paid in 1997? $36,000, according to our tipster! A nice 27-bagger in seven years. Not too shabby. Anyway, our tipster also included some photos of other houses in the neighborhood which we’ll assume a healthy portion of our audience is as unfamiliar with as we are. We’re going to try to make it out there one of these next weekends. Can anyone fill us in on the recent history of the area? GMAP P*Shark

  1. Isn’t this all pretty circular? People refer to names as though we should know who they are? And we should know what “mischief” they have been up to. Rgith now the only mischief seems to be accusing each other of mischief. What identity games are people talking about (I really don’t want an answer!)? Who cares if people post under multiple names. Or if they argue both sides of the issue. If they argue well it is informative, if not, well, one can scan down fairly quickly. Okay now I am taking my own advice and never never getting ivolved in this conversation again.

P.S. okay I’ll admit that I was flattered when someone accused me (or someone pretending to be me) of assuming multiple identities etc. My life is complicated wnough without that. You will know if it is me if the post is vaguely judgmenttal, righteous with a sense of dispair about the lack of social justice and obsession with economic gain!

  2. I don’t see how passwords and logins would improve this situation. What’s to stop someone from registering under a bunch of different names? True, they wouldn’t be able to steal other people’s identities, but they could still post under mulitple names a la Bx2Bklyn and, more generally, plenty of forms of mischief would remain within reach.

Making the posts anonymous, as was suggested earlier, probably would be more effective. You’d need to make sure the posts were numbered or something though, so that people posting late in a thread could refer back to earlier posts without confusion.

  3. I remember what he said and he never said PLG and B2b were the same. And I apologize to CHP for not correctly remembering that she said she was from Crown Heights, not PLG. I am very sorry it has been made so much of.

  4. I actually grew up in Cypress Hills. Looking at these photos is very nostalgic for me. I should go back there sometime, I suppose, though it really does require a degree of emotional fortitude to return to ones roots.

  5. Putnam-denizen,

I know what you mean about finding wonderful houses in the middle of a city or the middle of nowhere, and wondering what it would be like to live there. Since I’m from the area originally, I’ve spent a great deal of time driving through most of upstate NY over the years, and have found all kinds of great places to nest, both in rural areas and in small towns and cities.

It’s times like that when I wish I had a successful and lucrative occupation like a writer, or artist, and didn’t have to be in the big city. Although small town life does have its downsides as well. I guess it’s just human nature to fantasize about life on the other side of the fence.
