The Carlton Avenue Bridge, part of the Atlantic Yards footprint, is scheduled to close in less than a week for up to two years of reconstruction. Traffic is going to be rerouted to Sixth and Vanderbilt avenues. Atlantic Yards Report sees the closing as the start of a “three-year reconstruction clock,” since the Sixth Avenue Bridge’s one-year rehab is supposed to follow work on the Carlton Avenue Bridge. If that timetable is followed, therefore, it means the earliest the Nets arena would open is January 2011.

A Sign on Pacific Street [Brit in Brooklyn]
whine, whine, whine
boo hoo hoo
don’t you people have anything better to do than sit around and bitch about having to walk a little more? god, with all the problems in the world i would think hauling your fat ass another couple of blocks would be good and keep you healthier so my insurance rates don’t keep going up!

Yes, I agree with 1:01:
“This seems like a Trojan Wedge being silently HAMMERED into the community!”
11:52. you wrote. “Both legal cases are in appeal ”
that is just factually wrong. the EIS case is not under appeal. it is pending a decision on the original claims.
I AM REALLY PISSED ABOUT THIS CLOSURE.
This is WAY premature. Simply premature. They are taking a city street/structure for their own convenience AND as a TROJAN WEDGE in the community.
All us peds who use that bridge are getting the short end of the stick. PERIOD. It is the only viable way to walk from most of FG to PH, Flatbush and PS. It is MORE THAN DOUBLE my walk time back and forth from 20 minutes to 40-50 minutes. The only options is to walk all the way down through FG to Atlantic and Flatbush to walk all the way back the heck up Flatbush. I wrote on another Brownstoner thread on this when he had it on his AM news links.
The bridge will probably stay put for ages AND, the developer should be providing a footbridge overpass or some other arrangement. No, FCRatfink is sticking it to us. They are creating that SUPERBLOCK de facto before building even begins. It’s a go-effing-get-used-to-it because it’s too bad. This is what this says. No consideration of the way Carlton is also a release valve for Flatbush traffic. People wanting to get to the eastbound BQE, can bypass Flatbush to Tillary by going north on Carlton.

My comments that day:
I am WAYYYYY mad about the closing of the Carlton Avenue Bridge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That bridge is the main pedestrian link between neighborhoods. I walk between PS, Flatbush, PH and FG all the time. I don’t have wheels and taking the Vanderbilt bus is not a great option AT ALL…way out of the way and costs money. They should put in a pedestrian walkway while this MERDE goes on for YEARS!…and it’s apparently only so they get to use the bridge for their own access…they are unlikely to demolish the bridge for a long, long time if they even demolish it at all.
This seems like a Trojan Wedge being silently HAMMERED into the community!
THANKS RATNER!

And they’re closing the bridge which they 1) don’t own but will have full and sole use 2) don’t even have enough of the land in place to start the project, justify the taking of city streets, etc.
HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhh!

AY as it currently is proposed won’t need to be stopped by the courts; it will be stopped by the economy. Seriously, who needs 16 skyscrapers-full of luxury condos?
there is no such thing as sixth & vanderbilt. is there?
So much for a quick walk from Fort Greene to Park Slope. That little bridge used to serve as my short-cut. Such is life. I guess I’ll buy a bicycle.
Will it be completely closed to pedestrians too ?
